or is it just tacked on rules? If not how does it scale, how well was it tested with lower player counts.

The game has a quick setup phase where you set out the amount of Jobs, ISK(money), and specialists based on the number of players. The game plays quite well 2 players. It is very cutthroat in the 2 player version. Dave and I have probably played the 2 player version the most with over 300 plays. It holds my attention still, but we are also very mean to each other at this point. There are some really neat combos that can be discovered through repetitive play.

The game really does play great at all player counts.

I agree it is very good with 2, we have played multiple variants in our play testing but the base game is still really tight with 2. One 2 player variant to try is when a card says "steal from all players" you treat the bank as a player.

I have played the game 2 player more than any other way and I agree with Jake, it keeps me interested and engagued in strategy even after so many plays.

I can confirm: 2 players works well. The setup tweaks are seamless, and otherwise the game plays exactly the same. No dummy player-type shenanigans.

My partner and I just just played two games back-to-back on our first go with it last night, which basically never happens. It's fun and super fast and you're constantly making interesting decisions.
