That's definitely a bit more relevant to the point I was trying to make with my comment.

"Superior" can be defined in many ways, and commercial success is one of them. Is the art style of the new edition of Colosseum the Transformers of the board game industry? Only time will tell!

Indeed. It should be noted that DoW released their version nine years ago with an MSRP of $50 and (to some) superior artwork and components. It was not considered a commercial success.

One is left to wonder whether or not the artwork really was superior in the edition that was not a commercial success. whistle

Let's ask Van Gogh, Monet, or Gauguin.

We could also ask DoW and TMG whether they consider themselves primarily artists or businesses.

Irrelevant, if we're just discussing the quality of the art.

But not irrelevant to the initial point, which was insinuating that the MSRP was to blame for the game's lack of commercial success. There is the potential case where the art - superior in quality as it may be - was not as effective at selling the game as it needed to be, and that this art may just do a better job of that.

All speculation, of course, but it's a fair point to consider.

Sure, granted and agreed.

Just look at the Games DoW was selling then and now. Colosseum didn't quite in. They like to push the same lighter weight sort of game: Ticket to Ride, Five Tribes, Smallworld, Memoir '44. And then pour on the expansions. Which is a giant rip off, esp. when done right away or within the first year of the game coming out. They've had their share of stinkers. See Cargo Noir. Or Pirate's Cove.
