Similar rules? same rules?
Could I use the High Lightning counters and rules in Snapshot?
Hey Charger, Clark Cramer here again. The games are the same scale and everything so you can use the counters and rules absolutely (in fact, I have used AHL components on the snapshot maps, and other 1/2 inch deck plans for that matter). I would reiterate what others have said; the rules are similar, but different in focus. Snapshot evolved out of the basic traveller rules as a way to use map and counters to resolve encounters. AHL was from a later generation which included Striker and was more of a way to resolve mass combat/pure military encounters in Traveller. I would say Snapshot is more geared toward roleplaying/Traveller encounters. Like Bob said, I have played AHL much more than snapshot and prefer it. I also agree with Art; the rule sets differ in some particulars, and AHL had rules for special cases not present in snap shot, but the similarities are clear to see, and neither one is particularly complicated.
If you can find a copy of Snapshot and have any interest in this stuff I would say definitely do it. Not only do you get the additional deck plans, you get some counters without stats on them so you can generate your own boarding parties for home grown scenarios. You can do that with the AHL counters too just by ignoring the stats on the back (there's also a limited set of character counters without stats in AHL) but I always find that distracting. Going from a capital size ship to a scout/courier or free trader or something changes the situation dramatically. The action is more fast and furious but still a lot of fun.
