My friend Johnny and I were walking around BGG.CON Spring 2016 looking for a fun game to play that took an hour or less. We saw Nicholas with a Players Needed flag up for a few games, including Race for the Galaxy. I'd wanted to play it for a while, so we joined him. I had never played, he had played a few times, and Johnny had played several times.

Johnny started with Earth's Last Colony, went for production and consumption, and quickly started getting victory points (VP). I started with Alpha Centauri, developed Contact Specialist, settled the windfall planet Uplift Race, and soon after settled Old Earth to try and consume from my other planets. Nicholas went the get-12-cards-down route, including a bunch of rebel planets.

I kept getting stuck, because I had several windfall planets and needed to consume and produce, but I never seemed to have cards meaning I had to do explore. I had developed Expedition Force which at least let me see an extra card on explore. Then just when I seemed to get some cards, Nicholas put down his twelfth. He had a ton of bonuses for having rebel planets and really racked up the points.

I had 1 VP token and 9 VP in cards for a paltry total of 10 VP. Johnny had 16 VP in chips (out of 32) and 6 in cards for a total of 22 VP. Nicholas had 1 VP token and 34 VP in cards for a dominating total of 35 VP. Way to go Nicholas! That was fun, I really liked it.

It took 65 minutes with me learning.

What do you think is the best strategy for a newb like me?

Settle windfall, Trade-Consume for cards, leech off the opponents' Settle and Develop. If you can't settle another windfall, Produce, Trade-Consume for more cards.

Explore is for 2PA games.

I wasn't fond of this game until I realized the importance of Trade-Consume.

yeah, settle windfall ->trade->consume is critical to learn early. Cards are money. More money (i.e. cards) doesn't win but it gets you access to a better selection and allows you to pay for those bigger consume worlds that you can 2xVP consume on later

Well, something doesn't add up here. Perhaps a rules error. You had several windfalls and "needed to consume and produce". You never called Consume:Trade for cards (never seemed to have cards and needed to explore). You ended the game with 1 vp chip, thus never called Consume:x2. You played Old Earth, which means your goods would have to have been consumed at some point, since Johnny was producing and consuming.

1) You should have called Consume:Trade, ideally multiple times, and 2) aside from that, Consume powers are not optional, so you would have had to have gotten VP chits.

I played Old Earth so that I could Consume. It gave me 1 VP for two resources consumed from my 2 windfall planets, if I remember correctly. It wouldn't surprise me if I made an error. Nicholas had 12 cards on the table very quickly, so I didn't have much time to do much else. I kept running out of cards and playing Explore to get more - neither of my opponents played Explore in the last portion of the game.

Old Earth allows you to consume up to two goods, for 1 VP EACH. So, you definitely made a mistake there.

Running out of cards is always a major problem in Race. Next time, trying to figure how to get more cards should be a priority. Consume-trade off windfalls, or build planets or developments that give you cards for various actions. It was the bit I struggled with most at first.

Now, I probably struggle most with leeching my opponents' calls...

Cheers,
Graham
