Dungeons & Dragons could "foster an inmate’s obsession with escaping from the real-life correctional environment, fostering hostility, violence and escape behavior," prison officials said in court. That could make it more difficult to rehabilitate prisoners and could endanger public safety, they said.

I think that with a responsible GM it (c/w)ould have beneficial positive behavior reinforcement capacity. Don't Psych doctors do role-playing for the same reason?

In addition to reasons already stated, many prisons don't allow activities where an inmate has power over another inmate like a judge or DM.

I do admit, if I was ever sent to prison, I would probably join the D&D gang.

Hmm... Offhand I would say the ruling was utterly ridiculous. As the lawer pointed out...

“If more inmates were über-nerdy D&D players, life would be good.”

Agreed. And yet, in this case the DM was "sentenced to life in prison in 2002 for bludgeoning and stabbing his sister’s boyfriend to death" so what category would he fall under?

If Jack Chick has taught me anything, it's that playing D&D will give you actual magical abilities. Abilities that prisoners could easily use to escape.

D&D has had a hard time in prison because dice are seen as gambling paraphernalia. Inmates would place torn up scraps of paper with the appropriate numbers on them in old peanut butter jars and just take one out to simulate dice rolls or use a spinner most of the time to get the same effect.

That said, if they can homebrew intoxicants, homebrewing an RPG won't be hard.
Yes. D&D played by blokes like Knee Cruncher MCCrusher.

Sadly it comes for the brigade (I suspect) that wants to take us back to the 90's, the 1890's.

As if they're even interested in rehabilitation. The mere fact society continuously jokes about prisoners being raped indicates how little care is given to prisoners. Does anyone think that prison systems who can't (or won't) prevent physical sexual assault care at all abut rehabilitation?

You can't stop d&d, shadowrun, twilight, tunnels & trolls, runequest, empire of the petal throne.

It's in the mind. If people can talk, they can play.

You can stop dice rolling but that's about it.

---

And completely agree with Pdougherty above. Our jails and prisons should be structured such that beatings and rapes are impossible. It's a design issue. It's an administration issue.

Are all their characters Assassins or Thieves?
