So, is this a Mayfair policy? no online rulebooks whatsoever?

Looks like Mayfair hasn't even posted the Caverna rulebook. In that case, could someone scan or even just type out the section of the rules that covers the "side job" and "variant tiles"? Seems to me that these variants could easily be added on to the old edition. Some of the variant spaces are the same as the existing cards. Thanks!

If that is Mayfair's policy, do they think it's beneficial to their business? Or it may be their policy because it's too much work for them. I think it may be the later, judging by the quality of their website. Personally, I will not buy a game without being able to read to rules first, and I know many others with similar feelings. While I do have the Z-Man edition I'm no so invested in it that I wouldn't consider switching to this if I feel it's an upgrade.

It is, technically, an upgrade of sorts. The card mix has been reduced to 48 Ocks and 48 Imps, heavily designed to produce relatively balanced hands, obviating the need for drafting while tending to result in more frequent useful combos.

The rules, now split into two booklets, are significantly rewritten and improved. Major props for this.

The main playing board is now one fold-over unit with a jigsaw add-on for extra actions depending on player count. There are also several variant action tiles designed to open up the decision tree, promote early growth, and increase scores. Various action spaces have been renamed, but are otherwise unchanged. The "family" version of the game has been excised and will be issued as a stand-alone somewhere down the line.

Goods and resources are now all shaped meeples. This is thematically pleasing, though slightly less utile. Food counters are bigger and more durable, a definite improvement. Fences, however, are now stick-like, although this is offset by farmeeples for your workers, a distinct improvement.

So, is it worth picking up to someone who already owns an earlier version? Yeah, probably, depending on how bad you need those meeples, the several dozen "new" cards, and the variant add-ons, balanced against whether you can afford it. I know I'll pick one up sooner or later, but I'm in no rush to do so.

I've been working my way up to that very thing, Jimmy. I've been in a very hermitic mode for too long. Miss playing with you and Amanda! One of these days, pal...
