We can't figure out if we can repair the hull from inside the ship or if we need to drag some hull plates back before efforting repair.

For that matter, can we repair the Homing Beacon or Engine simply with engineering dice or do we need other parts first?

Thanks,
Rob

You have to meet the requirements to perform the task, so yes you have to leave the ship for the plates and the repair kit as I recall. Same idea for the beacon.

Check out pages 4 and 8 of the rules.
page 4 wrote:
Crash Salvage Status Boards: These boards
are used to identify recovered debris that has
been restored and the functionality of the
equipment. Note: The Engine, Hull and Homing
Beacon boards do not need to be recovered, only
repaired.

page 8 wrote:
Hull Plating: There are 6 of these and 5 are needed to repair the ship for lift off. Of course, Engines must also be repaired to lift off. The Red Hex symbol shows the Plating offers some cover.

There are no debris tokens for the Engine and Homing Beacon (though there is for the Homing Amplifier), so for these repairs you just use an Engineering action while in the ship (which is what that note from page 4 refers to).
