Spanish Civil War: The World War of Spain is aptly titled. It covers a WW2 fought in the Spanish peninsula. But that's a false picture. The game uses A&A mechanics to cover the SCW and that is its' major failing. It probably gives A&A players a new experience for their favorite game. But the SCW was not WW2.

There are two major errors in the game. First, the Nationalist player has control of the Straits of Gibraltar. Historically the Republic had most of the navy denying sea passage to the army units in North Africa. The Nationalists should move the Army of Africa to the Spanish mainland in a strategic move. The Nationalists should not outgun the Republic in the battle for the Balearic islands. Secondly the Nationalists and the Republicans start with equal air forces. Republic airpower should be double the Nationalist force.

There are other problems as well. The SCW was an infantry war and the Nationalist troops were usually better. A&A has no mechanism for distinguishing troop quality. Also, the game does not include artillery units. Some A&A games do and Spanish army organization calls for it. The R&D chart should be ignored, R&D had no role in the SCW.Aircraft should only be purchased with Germany/Italy or Soviet resource points. Tanks, likewise should be available through external resource points, but tank production should only be allowed in the Basque provinces.

A major flaw in the game is the inconsistent area names in the set-up chart and the map. This can be remedied by consulting the map printed with the rules, although one province appears on neither map. I will post an error correction list elsewhere.
