Ok so I'm rubbish at picking new games, and you guys have always been helpful. heres my checklist.

>A game that plays well with 2, yet can scale up (e.g. Reef encounter, Puerto Rico)

>Looks great (Colosseum, San Marco etc)

and an added bonus, meaningful and tricky decisions throughout the game, and a nice scoring mechanism (A la Knizia)

I have a short list at the mo of:

Tikal
Java
Caylus
Keythedral
Torres

Let me know what you think.

I'd say Torres. I love the 3-Dness of it and I enjoyed it with both 2 and 3 players (a fairly rare attribute in games, IME). Oh yeah, and it's half as long as Tikal, Java, or Caylus which, in my household massively increases the odds of it being played.

All are pretty good. My least favorite for 2 is Caylus. The catch up mechanism doesn't really work with two, and since the rich gets richer, the winner can be decided way too early for my taste.

Of your five, I like Caylus the best for game play but the board art is far from great. But IMHO I would take game play over board art any day.

I have only played Tikal on SBW and it was quite enjoyable if you like area control type of games. I hear the board and bits are beautiful.

Torres was okay but a tad too abstract to be a favorite of mine.

Keythedral seemed like a Settlers of Catan wannabe with all the fun sucked out of it.

I haven't tried Java.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with any of these choices.

Not sure what the people you'd be playing with would like, so I'll try to pick the ones that would go over the best in general:

1. Tikal
2. Keythedral
3. Torres

Tsk tsk. The poor guy comes on the forum looking for help, and y'all push crack on him. Now listen, just put the credit card down. Take some deep breaths. Think of your game closet, filled with cardboard and wood goodness. You don't need another game, you just need to relax.

Oh, but if you actually wanted help with the decision, instead of help with the wanting, pick Keythedral.

Caylus. Completely no question. Beautiful game for 2, chess like. Hard. Scales well to 3 or 4.

Tikal I like although not as much. But really requires 4 to shine. A little lucky for my tastes and it does encourage those who are prone to thinking to hard to, well, think too hard.

Not real fond of Torres. I like Java, but it's a little on the abstract and brainburning side for a lot of people and it doesn't hit the table very often.

Keythedral is a whole lot of fun, but again, I don't think 2 is its best player count.

I think I am leaning towards keythedral on this one. How does the game play with 2 compare to say Reff encounter and PR. Is there sufficient depth and conflict?

Torres and Tikal are your best bets here. They both play VERY well with 2P, they both scale well to 3 and 4P, and they both look stunning.

Stay away from Caylus.

Keyrthedral is in the post. I think this is probably a good choice as my girlfriend loves settlers, and loves handling resources......yet I can't stand the luck factor.

Thanks for your help,
Dav
