After several weeks of Machi Koro playing, we came up with a wishlist of new cards that would counter the prevailing winning-strategies which were getting tiresome (like hoard the major 6s and then swap/steal the good stuff). We wanted to balance the game play more so we playtested some variant cards, tweaked them, and then I went ahead and crafted them for our games.

If you would like to put a new twist to your Machi Koro games, you are welcome to try them.

Permission has been granted by IDW Publishing for non-commercial personal use only.

Primary Industry

Shrimp Boat "If you have a harbor, get 2 coins from the bank on anyone's turn" - We added a Fish Market secondary industry card, so we wanted to add this new primary industry card as well. Plus, we felt that constantly rolling 3s in the beginning needed a payoff of some sort to balance out the frequent Sushi Bars. So, Shrimp Boat.

Secondary Industry (Shops, Factories, Markets)

Fish Market "If you have a harbor, get 3 coins from the bank for each (boat) that you own, on your turn only" - We were thinking that the fishing industry needed a boost for those that were investing in their Harbor cards. This also introduced some risk to the players that were using the Demolition Company for a quick cash advantage by sacrificing-and-reincarnating their Harbor landmark. Plus, it spawned a new Harbor-based strategy into the game.

Trucking Company "Get 2 coins from the bank for each (factory) or (fruit/vegetable) owned by all players, on your turn only" - This card filled a 10 roll (which we felt was a little lack-luster). By the time everyone is rolling two dice, there are plenty of qualifying cards on the table to give the owner of this card a big payoff.

Restaurants

Casino "Current player rolls 2 dice. Get dice total from player. If doubles, roller wins amount from the bank" - Well, they have restaurants in casinos, right? Eh, so to add an element of chance to the game we came up with this card for amusement. One of our players has an uncanny ability to roll doubles. It defies statistical explanation. Anyhow, he loves this card. It's like a loose slot machine for him.

Major Establishments

Water Agency "Roll 1 die and collect the amount from the bank, on your turn only" - We wanted a pay off for rolling 5s to help get some income early on in the game. This card fills the gap; and it's not stealable, because losing your coveted cards gets old. So, yeah. Early money.

Power Plant "Roll 2 dice. Establishments owned by other players that are activated by dice total are closed for renovation" - We made this card to upgrade and replace the Renovation card. This card is a potential game-changer when it closes down key rolls that the other players are banking on (like the major 6s.. or actually, any Major Establishment cards, because the only way to open them back up is for the player to re-roll that number on their turn). If you want longer games, this card seems to stall the early leaders for a few rounds and lets the rest of the pack catch up.

Introducing these new cards into our game made us have to change our strategies, which was what we were shooting for. The new cards put more money on the table, especially in the early part of the game. This added value to the Restaurant card owners and made us think about which Major Establishments we wanted. With more money in everyone's pocket, we had to protect our bankroll against sudden losses. Binge spending on Landmarks became a strategy ("Sorry, can't pay you. No money"). And introducing the chance cards (the Casino income and Power Plant renovations) kept everyone alert.

Feel free to make your own set and try them out. Hope it rejuvenates your Machi Koro games. Have fun.

Thanks. I made the cards up using Photoshop. Some are made from scratch. Others are based on images I grabbed off Google, then tweaked to mimic the Machi Koro style.

As for the cards, there's an incredible trove of crafting advice in the BGG PnP guild. I followed the how-to thread found at https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/490643/making-cards-youll-n....

I grabbed the image for the card backs from the Images gallery, and then put all the images onto 1 page, saved as PDF, then had them color printed at Staples on linen stock (6 copies each). Next was sealing the sheets with glossy acrylic spray from Ace Hardware. Then I spray glued the fronts and back together using a light table to line the edges up (turned out that it was a good thing I made extra backup sheets). And the last step was trimming the cards and corner punching them.

The acrylic sealing darkened the final color a little more than I hoped for so they don't quite match the original cards. But it's not really noticeable during play, except to me because I find myself watching the deck to see if one of my cards is coming up.

Very nicely done. I made my own "expansion" about a year ago:

I'm making my own 'agnostic' expansion for Machi Koro (mainly because I didn't like that the game immediately ends once one player completes all of their landmarks, making the players decide which landmark is 'useless' to them) called The Statue, it adds a single statue like wooden mini to the game that acts as the victory marker, which is only purchasable once someone has built all of their landmarks. Just dunno how much it should be. I was thinking at least 30 coins because of the Airport, but maybe more?

If anyone wants to further tweak their Machi Koro game, check out the yen chits by designer Marianne Waage. I bought a set of arch punches just because of her post. And they came out beautifully.
