BSG 551 - Good Morning Tauron
5 Player Game to Kobol (B)

Welcome to the start of “551 - Good Morning Tauron”.

Note! Important! This is not my first time modding, but is my first time modding on BGG. For this reason, it is a base game so there's fewer things for me to frak up. After making it partway to Earth in the 500 series, it's the least I can do to return the favor.

My preamble is based on Desonos's, who stole it from ed_hennessy.

This will be a play-by-forum game in the style established by ColtsFan76. Thanks go to him for starting this. Thanks also to Orphius, JasperHawk, and Mawkee for their work on the mod tools that will be used. Thank you to HazyAssaulter for the inspiration for this game.

Rules and Guidelines:

d10-1 In order to participate, you must own a copy of the game.

I can send you details via Geekmail if required. Do what I do - keep a cheat sheet in your Dropbox!

d10-2 Subscribe to this thread and to check in at least twice per day, preferably around 12 hours apart.

Please try not to hold the game up - it’s a courtesy to the other players. I keep an eye on the game during the day as possible, but do not have access to the spreadsheet at work; most board updates will be at 8pm EST. I will generally warn you at the 24h mark. I will replace people who habitually hold the game up. If you’re going to be offline, that’s fine - just warn the group, and try to get in CO’s to cover your absence.

Do note that if there is active discussion concerning your current turn you will not be rushed.

d10-3 All communication between players must occur in this thread ONLY.

Anything that needs to be communicated privately by me and a player will take place via GeekMail. When sending me a GeekMail, please include the game number, your character name, and a description in the subject line. (Example: "BSG 551: Starbuck - Secret Destiny Use")

d10-5 Private communications with me should be via GM, with the subject prefaced “BSG 551:”
I'm out of modding practice, please be kind and try to not confuse me too much!

d10-5 Follow typical play-by-forum conventions when posting.

This includes always making it clear what character you are speaking as by including an appropriate banner at the top of each post. Banners created by DukeOfEarl et al. are available here. If you are mobile, I would recommend using the shortcut features I believe most phones have to save your banner, otherwise please type your character name in caps at the top of your post. Other pictures for adding flavor can be found in this compilation.

Also, be sure to leave regular discussion in a plain font, in-character flavor text in italics, and actions you wish to take in bold. Be especially conscious of the bolding of your actions; I will not execute an action if it isn't bolded.

d10-6 Do not edit your posts.

Please do not go back and edit posts unless you are quickly fixing a typo immediately after posting. Instead, either make a new post stating what you would have changed or delete strikethrough what you wish to change. This is to prevent confusion (both for me and your fellow players).

d10-7 Do not quote posts from more than one page back.

The game can get much less fun if some players have perfect memories, so if you are quoting another player it may not be from more than one page back.

d10-8 Respect the secrecy rules.

Battlestar Galactica is a much less interesting game if the secrecy rules are not closely followed. I suggest everyone take a look at the official "Secrecy Clarifications" document, the last page of the Official FAQ. In particular, please make sure you don't:
* Say "medium" if you only played one card.
* Talk about scouted cards beyond good or bad.
* Identify what cards (or even what colors) you played into a skill check.
* Volunteer what cards are in your hand unless it is relevant to the situation.

Conditional Orders (COs)

1 I ask that you put in COs for pretty much anything you can think of. All COs should be sent to me via GeekMail, and be clearly labeled by having "CO" (and a description of what the CO is for) in the subject line.

2 Do not post public COs under any circumstances; this includes posting bold text when it is not your turn to act.

3 Under many circumstances, I will not wait for interrupts before executing actions. The following is a (non-comprehensive) list of examples of things for which I will not ask for interrupts for (and thus will not have interrupts played on them unless you put in a CO):

Declare Emergency
Strategic Planning on Launch Scout unless there is only one raptor remaining.
Strategic Planning on attacks by vipers.
Strategic Planning on any rolls that would aid the Cylons.
Evasive Maneuvers unless the viper is a. destroyed, b. manned, c. it is the last ship protecting a civilian, d. it is the last ship in a sector and there are no civilians on the board, or e. if there are 2 or fewer undamaged vipers left.

4 I will assume that you have a standing CO to pass on any interrupt that you do not hold in your hand. Players are encouraged to put in COs to pass on interrupts that they are holding but do not intend to play. Any COs to pass on interrupts will be resolved once everyone else has already passed, to minimize the amount of information revealed by these COs.

5 If you have an interrupt-style character ability, then you must put in a CO to use your ability when appropriate. For example, I will not ask if Starbuck wants to use Secret Destiny on every crisis card that is played, but she may put in a CO to pause to let her decide when a crisis card meets certain criteria.

6 Be very clear when writing your COs. If I feel it is ambiguous, I will let you know and will not execute the CO. Feel free to make them as complicated as you like, as long as they are understandable.

Despite my best intentions, I will make mistakes and miss things. If you see something that looks wrong let me know. Thanks for being patient with me!

Repeat - this is a base game only and I'm a way out of practice mod (this is my first game modding on BGG, using dispatches, etc.) I fully understand if you want to wait for someone more experienced or a more complex game!

I find it quite entertaining that I heard from my alternates before I heard from most of the initial invites.

Quick question on common "house-rules" for Base-only:

1. Are we using base-game ICs or the Pegasus version?
2. When a Cylon reveals, will they have to take an action to pass their remaining loyalty cards off (base game), or will they be automatically handed off if distance is 6 or less (expansion rules)?
3. Will there be a Quorum hand-size limit of 10 (expansion rules to eliminate "cheesing" of certain Quorum cards)?

I'm good with #1 either way. I generally prefer the house rules for #2 and #3 - those situations don't come up much, but I think the expansions fixed problems with those niche situations (e.g. Boomer receiving both YAAC cards post-sleeper, so there will not be a second Cylon until at least the second round post-sleeper). I am happy to roll with strictly base-game rules, but thought it was worth bringing up. Thanks!

I was planning on a totally base game, rules as is. I'm open to implementing 2 and/or 3 as they don't involve replacing cards, though it is at the group's discretion. Unless everyone has a protest I am planning on base game ICs.

Obviously we signed up for a base game so adding Pegasus and such won't make much sense.

I agree with the free handoff. It helps preserve game balance when the cylon's second loyalty card was also a cylon, as handing off a card as an action is a really huge tell that doesn't add a lot of bluff value to the game.

I don't think a hand limit is necessary, as if the president shouldn't really be hoarding that many cards regardless of their side, it is too big a tell that you are trying to be useless. That said the limit does just sorta make sense as more of a general errata thing, but I don't feel that strongly about it.

I'd prefer to use all base rules, but don't really care that much about the automatic hand-off of loyalty.

Free handoff sounds fair. I haven't played base for about a year and totally forgot that free handoff was an expansion addition. Otherwise let's keep Quorum deck with no hand limit and base reveal-destiny ICs.

Just PMd Pirikou - I suspect he hasn't subscribed to the thread. Speaking of - if you haven't already, please subscribe to the thread!

Actually, provided the team is willing to commit to it as a strategy, hoarding Quorum can be a strongly pro-human option - four XOs - one round - leaves the President with the entire Quorum Deck in hand, and from then on, they can play any Quorum card that isn't removed from the game. You always get a Mission Specialist on every Jump, you're guaranteed to be able to Authorize Brutal Force, can Arrest or Pardon anyone any time, etc.

Of course, it can also give a Cylon President the chance to Arrest everyone fairly easily, but there's usually a chance to stop their rampage before they can get everyone else locked up, and in the meantime you have the benefits of the Quorum and of everyone knowing what the President has in hand, limiting their ability to waste actions or deny utility.

It does rely on having an agreement that it's worth investing the turns into, and having enough quiet turns to do so, but it's sufficiently viable to justify the hand limit having been introduced in every expansion rulebook.

On the other hand, Destiny-revealing Investigative Committees, Quorum-hoarding Presidents, Repair-hoarding Cylons and other exploits can be part of the base game's charm for some players - chances to break the game that only the base game allows...

I just looked up Pirikou's user profile, which says they haven't logged in since June 3rd. That's odd since they have evidently PM'd the mod about joining this game. Any idea what is going on?

It's funny, when I started playing in PBFs -- long, long ago now -- I subscribed to the thread ... and noticed that I was going to the thread itself, noticing that there was a mail, and then noting that it was telling me about an update to the thread ... that I was just checking.

So I stopped subscribing to threads [grin].

I'll choose Helo.

Okay, guys, I'm ready to go.

Guys?

This is where the Raptor was, and from this skid mark it looks like Boomer took off with it (she just can't seem to handle the vertical thrusters). So, they've left me behind?

I JUST WENT TO TAKE A LEAK!

(Clanking noises)

That ... doesn't sound good.

(Shooting starts)

Not good not good not good not good!

Actually, Base-game Helo is a Military Leader. So, I think my CO would have me as Apollo.

Start in a viper in Sector 5. Regardless of my loyalty, initial draw of 2x Politics and 1x Tactics

"Apollo to Galactica, we have incoming bogies launching from the basestar. They appear to be on an attack vector around your starboard, which will bring them into firing range of the civilian ships in three standard time units. Requesting permission to engage."

One thing at a time, Lee. First, protect the civilian ships from the raiders. Then, protect the civilians on those ships from the political games Baltar is up to.
