When selling cotton to a port you flip the port and cotton mill involved. However, you can sell to the external market through a unflipped/flipped port. When you sell to the external market, do you flip the cotton mill involved in the sale? This might seem like a stupid question but I wasn't too sure as to the rule.

When you sell cotton to the external market:

1) Reveal a demand tile
2) Move the demand marker down the track based on the demand tile
3) If the demand hasn't reached bottom then you flip the cotton mill

From the rules the answer seems to be No.

"If you sell cotton to the Distant Market via a face-up port, do not flip the port."

The question was about the mill, not the port.

So "yes" is the correct answer. The mill is flipped, but the port is not.

On that note:

After the distant market has bottomed out, all players have to sell cotton to unflipped ports...correct?
i.e. I can no longer sell to the Midlands or Yorkshire - those options were only available in conjunction with the distant market being active.

From the rules:
"Each mill must sell to a face-up port or a Distant Market."
and
"You can flip a cotton mill when you choose the Sell Cotton action and are able to flip a connected, un-flipped port as well."

So, I would say, you are definitely correct.

I've played only one complete game so far (beta-testing the Steam version), and I have to say, I'm enamored. I've yet to completely "grok" the rules, but having them enforced electronically is great. I figure once I can play without a single "huh? Why not?", then I'll be ready for the actual, physical game.

As Ken said, you can sell to Distant market also through flipped or unflipped ports, not necessarily through Yorkshire and Midlands. I hope you got that!

I'm a game explainer...but I've got to say that this one still has me scratching my head! So I'm right there with you. The rules book is awful! I should look it up on Steam (I knew it was on smart phones, but not Steam).

Thanks; that makes me feel a bit less stupid.

It's still in beta on Steam, but I believe it's due to be released in October.

Ugh, you're giving me too much credit; I didn't say that. That's another one of those little exceptions that I have some difficulty remembering. I should probably make a short, written list.

Ryan Sturm used to do full game explanations on a podcast called "How to Play." They are excellent. He has one for Brass. He'll have you up and playing in about an hour.

He still has them archived at howtoplaypodcast.com

You're talking about the original game; not the new revised Brass: Lancashire...right?
