Subject says it all. Medium/heavy weight preferred.

Say I want something under $30-40 preferably, under 90-120mins, and readily available online. Most of what I've seen is OOP or longer than I could probably handle. Thx.

I have posted a video review of Invaders from Dimension X! and I discuss it in part, in exactly this context. While I don't think the game qualifies as 'medium/heavy' (it is lighter than that), it does offer a great introduction to many traditional hex-and-counter wargame mechanics.

Though not about a war between humans, Smokejumpers has hex and counter wargame mechanisms.

Just about any 2 player wargame within reason can be played solo. I play most of my games solo simply because of time and player constraints. Victory Point Games puts out quite a few solo specific games on a wide variety of subjects the only drawback is most if not all are not hex based wargames. But they are still in many ways great intro games to the hobby with varying levels of complexity.

Not necessarily. I mostly am interested in the genre altogether.

The "Pocket Edition" was released as a Kickstarter tie-in, and is priced at $2.95:

I beg to differ with this suggestion. This isn't a solo game at all and I think that would make it even more difficult to use as some kind of introduction to the genre. How about Struggle for the Galactic Empire? That is actually a solitaire-designed wargMe of medium/medium+ complexity.

Since not all wargames are land wargames ... War at Sea and Victory in the Pacific both play pretty well solo. VITP is medium weight, WAS might be a little light for your taste but is a good intro to VITP. If you want hexes and heavier than either, try Fire in the Sky or Across the Pacific.

Ogre is really a fantastic game.

If you want something heavier, Conflict of Heroes?

Just about any wargame that doesn't require player-concealed information (e.g., blocks or cards) could work solo. I suggest you start by searching for chit-pull wargames, then see if there's a topic that interests you. I also echo the suggestion of Struggle for the Galactic Empire, and would also suggest Silent War. Both of them are designed as solo games. If you'd also like to play with others, then maybe A Victory Lost or anything in the Great Battles of History series might be a good place to start.

Check out Moonbase Alpha. Very light wargame with an economic factor to it, but for 2 Player.

For my solo-wargames I went with The Hunters: German U-Boats at War, 1939-43, RAF: The Battle of Britain 1940, Patton's Best, D-Day at Tarawa and Hapsburg Eclipse.
I just wanted to try one...now I have a bunch and no time to play them. Meh. -.-

Not a lot of good heavy wargames at that time limit.

If he can get hold on War of the Worlds, which is for 1-2 players.

A simple and a little silly war game based on the novel by H..Wells.
Can be played in 5 to 60 minutes.

I can stretch the time limit to ~4 hours if the game's good!

Memoir '44 is online and you can play it solo

Not exactly what you are looking for, but a way to try out an intro level hex wargame.

Ogre is good, but I've never played it solo, so can't give you an opinion.

I think Victory Point Games has a bunch of solo based hex wargames that you could try out.
