New player here with a very light background in RPG's.

It seems that the imperial player sets up all tiles and all tokens throughout the map at the beginning of the session.

I would like to give some more immersion to the players. What do you think about keeping the tokens and possible minions hidden until the door is opened to that particular room?

Do you think that would slow the game down too much?

It would not only slow things down, it would make missions more difficult for the Rebels. Every mission is designed and tested around them knowing all the things that are listed in the mission briefing. Since so many of them have time limits, adding more "fog of war" will really penalize the Rebels.

The reserved groups already are hidden and only deployed by the mission events.. So not change there.

Otherwise, if you agree with the rebels to make the campaign more of a RPG instead of competitive, then try it. But many mission briefings refer to terminals or tokens the rebels need to interact with or destroy, and not seeing those from the beginning will require you to read and reread the mission rules a lot of times throughout the mission and increase the time limits.

I generally like the surprise of opening a door, but in IA, we have to assume that, with Rebel spies and scanning tech, that surprises would be few.

Most missions come with a time limit for the Rebels that is very tight. These would have to be significantly relaxed, or removed entirely if you were to hide any information from the Rebels.

Note that you are meant to read every event in full once it triggers, except for the options of choices you make, in which case you only read the one you made.

Rebels have stolen schematics of every base or ship they are assaulting, so thematically the only thing that should be hidden are the troops lying in wait. These aren't stone age barbarians exploring a cave =).

There are missions in the Hoth and ISB enforcers expansions that do use this mechanic of revealing tiles, you might want to check those out.
