My daughter (8) has gotten interested in environment and conservation, and I'm looking for a game with an environment or endangered species theme. Any ideas?

Until you said your daughter is eight, I was going to recommend Dog Eat Dog. Oh well, it still might be of interest if you think she's old enough to handle the satirical message the game succeeds in getting over to the players.

Industrial Waste might also be an option; well, it's related anyway.

There are a few geared towards that age group, like Alpha Animals or Wildlife Adventure; but they're probably more about the animals themselves than going about protecting them or the environment (and at least in the latter case the mechanisms are kind of remmoved from the theme.

Based on your profile, I'm guessing you wouldn't like Nature Fluxx, but it does fit the bill, and at least it's not Captain Planet.

Not exactly about nowadays enviromental issues, but it still deals with extinction of species, climatic change, etc ... and it's cute and fun:

Waldmeister is an early Andreas Seyfarth (Puerto Rico) game that has an environmental theme, but is probably a little complex for an 8-year old as well as a being a bit hard to find.

More available is Wildlife Adventure, a game indirectly about the environment since it's about endangered species. Fun, easy to play, lots of animal information on the cards, and there are a couple of copies up for sale on the Geek.

EcoFluxx is approriate for the age requirement, but is more above food chains and composting than the endangered species.

If you can find it: Save the Whales would fit the bill. I played it at about the same age. Comes with cool pewter whales. It was a game of the late 70's and can probably only be found on ebay or very lucky thrifting...

Yes, exactly. This is a collectible card game. I've played a few starter rounds, but haven't gotten into deck-building possibilities yet. But Xeko definitely sounds like the kind of game you're asking for.

Also check this one out, as a possibility: R-Eco. I haven't played it but have heard some good things.

It seems like some perverse joke to package environmentalism as a CCG, but I think Xeko will be coming soon to an easter basket near me. Thanks for the tip!

One more question: any preference between Costa Rica and Madagascar?

I've only dipped into the game a little, but I have cards from both sets. As far as I know, the cards are all basically the same, but the sets may each introduce new mechancics - I'm not sure about that yet. You can mix cards from both sets. Also, they are planning a third set for the end of this year.

I find the game interesting but I need to get more into it to form a solid opinion about its mechanics. The art production is very nice - the Costa Rico set even comes in a sort of cardboard chest.

I haven't played it, but Terra might fit the bill. It is explicitly about the environment.
