There are 10 types of people-- those who understand binary, and those who don't.

I went for a bike ride this morning.
On the path ahead of me is a jogger. I slow down some, but whiz past her.
Like she's not even moving.

Then, in the ditch to my right, I see a common sulphur butterfly. It takes off and starts flying alongside me.
Thing is, it's gaining on me. So I pedal a bit harder and it still keeps up.

It loses interest in the race, long before I would of.
I stopped for a second, wondering just how fast the thing was going.
There is a slight, but perceptible, headwind that we were going into as well!

I'd estimate that we we doing at least 20 mph.
Damn! You're flying bug and I'm on a machine designed to make me go fast-- Respect! cool

This isn't a sulphur, but it does show how butterflies can curl their wings and push through the air:

Sorry to disappoint you but it looks like the top speed a butterfly can fly at is around 12mph.

Is that a European or an African butterfly?

Which means the "jogger" was walking with a cane.

Busted by nature, Mabby.

I had a similar experience a year ago, Mabby. I was cycling along a canal at a speed of 15 kms/h and on the other side of the canal I saw a male Common Brimstone (lemon colored) flying at the same speed. After some kilometers it was still flying there. Then I saw a bridge and I speeded up to intercept the little bugger and let it pass. It amazed me. Respect for the butterflies.

We're not done yet!

The fastest butterflies are the skippers, which can fly at 37 miles per hour (60 kilometers per hour), but most butterflies fly at 5 to 12 miles per hour (8 to 20 kilometers per hour). A few species can fly at great heights, as much as 10,000 feet (3,050 meters).

Butterflies are c**ts. Lend one a fiver and you'll never see it again. Moths OTOH, are pretty chill (on the whole).
