I'm curious about this as well! I would really like to try out this game, yet the 3 player count isn't always easy to attain!

I really do not see why not. If I have a 2nd player, we could both choose to mine and try our luck at drawing the best hauls of crystals and sell them like in a 3+ player game. We could also still break down due to obsidian and be forced out like in a 3+ game. It may not be ideal, and you may want to tweak a few things.

I think the main things that could "suffer" would be the action cards, I suppose. With only two players - maybe their "match" or blocking action card - would be less likely to be out for play/in someone's hand.

Also, the bravery bonus is the most confusing part for me. I feel the rule book explains it poorly. With two players, it could just be ignored, and I guess you could just have an "automatic bonus" of X amount of coins/dollars for being the last miner in a 2p game. Or just forego it.
