Work has started on the next game using the "Fall Blau" system. I originally envisioned this system able to cover the entire Eastern Front from 1941-1944. Still possible, but I have to take smaller steps with my current situation...

Before & After Fall Blau: The Kharkov Battles will cover the May 1942 Second Kharkov battle and Manstein stopping the Soviet Operation Star with the Third Kharkov in March 1943.

Second Kharkov can already be seen in the Fall Blau Vassal module. It will be added in with a full map to cover Operation Star. Think of the old SPI Operation Star game from the AGS quad redone. Also included will be counters to complete the Fall Blau OOB through January 1943 for those wishing to extend its play (and make further scenarios).

As for Fourth Kharkov, that battle would be part of the Kursk game... if and when I get to it.

Preliminary work done on three of the four included scenarios. Rules footprint is smaller because of the free flowing nature of these battles and not having any mountains on the map.

Two physical mapsheets and 840 counters... plus charts and extras which I still have to discuss with Compass on what will be included.

I've decided to go with the name - Kharkov Battles: Before & After Fall Blau

It will have a smaller footprint and probably an easier entry into the system with less special rules.

Working on details... the included scenario for Fall Blau will allow for campaign games to run from 28 Jun 1942 to 5 Feb 1943. Ken wants to add a mating map between the two games which would essentially allow you to play a campaign from 28 Jun 1942 to 21 Mar 1943... if you have the space.

I'm just getting to grips with the first game now... I've always had a lot of interest in the Kharkov battles since I had the S&T game and the AGS quad so I love the idea of a prequel/sequel game covering them!

More details...

Kharkov Battles uses the Fall Blau basic rules to cover the Second & Third Battles of Kharkov.

Given the nature of the covered battles, this game has a shorter playtime and smaller space requirements making it an easier intro into the system used by Fall Blau. Included is a revised Terrain Effects Chart which should ease reference fatigue for either game. The back side of the main map is made to mate with the Fall Blau maps to allow players to combine the two games into one "Grand Campaign" to be played into March 1943. Also included are extra counters and reinforcement charts to allow for this possibility. There are four scenarios within the game: three independent and one which requires Fall Blau to play.

Independent Scenarios:

* Second Kharkov (K)(Six Turns/Avg Time 90-120 min)- Soviet attack and German Operation Fridericus to reduce the Izyum Salient from 12-28 May 1942.
* Third Kharkov (L)(Six Turns/Avg Time 90-120 min)- German drive to retake Kharkov in March 1943.
* Operation Star Scenario (Sixteen Turns/Avg Time 8 hrs)- Soviet drive for Kharkov and the Dnepr crossings from 2 February to 21 March 1943.

Fall Blau Scenarios:

* January Campaign (J)(14 Turns/Avg Time 10 hrs)- Maps A & B - Soviet ‘Little Saturn’ Operation has reached its high water mark and Popov’s 5th Tank Army is about to launch attacks of its own. Wintergewitter has failed and Fourth PanzerArmee is conducting a fighting withdrawal – 26 December 1942 to 5 February 1943.
* Extended Fall Blau using new counters and reinforcement charts (74 Turns/Avg Time 60-70 hrs)- All Maps (except KH) - Starting at 28 June 1942 and ending on 5 February 1943.

Components:

One 22 X 34 inch main map
One 22 X 34 inch extension map for Fall Blau
One smaller map with 19mm hexes
Three Countersheets – approximately 840 counters (1/2” size)
One 20 page Rulebook
Ten Player Aid cards with various Scenario Set-Ups, Tracks, Charts and Tables
One 10-sided dice
One Box and Lid set
