First, apologies if this is the wrong forum.

Now I have a curious question. When any game asks you to deal cards to the players but doesn't specify exactly how you should then how do you do it?

Poll
How do you deal cards to the players?
One at a time to each player starting with the player to your left/right
One at a time to each player starting with yourself
All at once starting with the player to your left/right
All at once starting with yourself
Other (Please specify in the comments)

My dad is a casino dealer in Las Vegas. It goes against my programming to do elsewise. It secretly makes me cringe when people do differently, but I hide it so I don't become "that guy".

Off the bottom? But when I am not doing that, I deal one at a time starting with the person on the left.

Into separate but equal piles, one for each player. Then each player chooses a pile. That way they are masters of their own fate.

Frankly I don't have a set way of doing it... just whatever strikes my fancy at the time. Sometimes individually to the people, sometimes as a complete set at a time, sometimes directly to the people, sometimes to piles in front of me first and then distribute. Thinking about it I think it mainly depends upon what is going on at the time. If someone is trying to explain the rules I'll deal in front of myself first so as not to disturb what they are doing. If it is a game we are all familiar w/ I'm more likely to deal out to the people directly.

I tend to deal subsets of 3-4 cards clockwise to each player until everybody has the cards they're supposed to get. Basically, unless I get other instructions, my mind defaults to the rules of Skat.

All at once when only a few cards, up to fiveish. One at a time starting to the left all the time when using standard deck of 52.

One at a time starting with left unless the game calls for it otherwise, like Euchre.

forwards, backwards, diagonal, and screwy loops of cards, giving each player 1 per loop. An old Euchre habit we had to 'mix it up more'.

One at a time, clockwise starting with the elder hand*. If each player is getting more than 6-7 cards, I most likely deal 2 or even 3 cards at a time.

Eldest hand: the player to the left of the dealer - usually the first to play in trick-taking or rummy games.

Take deck, toss into air, the blindfolded players must grope around and assemble a hand composed of the appropriate number of cards. Have a 3rd party pickup the remaining cards, reassemble them in the proper order and orientation, then place near deck. Start the game.

Dealing is one of those gaming practices where there's definitely a correct way, enough so that in most settings acting otherwise gives the other players cause to challenge or invalidate the deal.

If I have to deal just one card per person, I just hold a fan over the center of the table and each player picks their card.
Else, I will randomly deal to piles equal to the number of players, keeping mental track of how many cards are in each. Then each person picks their own pile of cards.
In both cases usually everybody picks the pile/card closest to them. I keep what has not been picked.

I sometimes deal them by twos, starting with the player on my left.

Depends on the mood.

Depending on so many things, but usually sets of 2-4 cards and depending on player number and table form I deal them directly or build stacks in front of me. It also depends if there is space anywhere to build stacks or if there are critical player boards before the players...

Depending on my confidence in the shuffle, I may deal twos and threes sometimes. When playing Biriba (card game popular with Greeks in which players get 11-card hands) I usually deal 3,3,3,2 to each player, but only if I have great confidence that the cards have been thoroughly shuffled, since otherwise that might deal sets or runs to a player.

Pete (tends to "one-at-a-time" deal with designer games)

Usually one-at-a-time, starting at my left. Not always.

Sometimes, one-at-a-time into a player's hand, semi-randomly choosing which hand to deal next. This requires a bit more focus, as you have to maintain a count of each pile separately, and make sure all the piles finish with the same number. Or, slightly simpler for counting, one-at-a-time in a semi-random order, but always making sure all piles finish a certain count before going on to the next count.

Some other pattern if specified by the rules or convention, e.g. Asshole, or a ghoulash hand at Bridge.
