My 9 year old niece is visiting today and my kids have been playing with her all morning. I just wandered through the living room and noticed that they broke out a boardgame to play with her.

Monopoly. Not any of the other games we play. Not any of the tons of better games I own. Monopoly. Sigh.

Whats wrong with kids playing Monopoly?

Really though, maybe the niece selected a game she knew?

Naaaah, there is an appeal to that game as a kid.

Also, you didn't fail as they pulled out a BOARD GAME.

Use it as a gateway game. In a week you'll be up to Campaign for Northern Africa.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do as a parent is to sit back and let your kids fail.

It's your own fault--you didn't stow it safely out of the reach of children. It's called "responsible Monopoly ownership"

(I actually have fond memories of playing Monopoly with my older brother and sister when I was growing up. Perhaps it was because we didn't play with the idiotic Free Parking-gives-you-money rule, perhaps it was because we had the good sense to usually call the game soon after the first player was eliminated... in any case, I've never experienced the Monopoly horror stories I've seen on this site.)

What's wrong with video games?

There are thousands of video games that are better than Monopoly.

One of my boys just loves Monopoly. He'll ask for it every game night. He's played plenty of others, some good ones too. But he's got the bug for Monopoly.

I weep for you, but like others said, it's a boardgame. Keep fighting the good fight and maybe it will be Fortress America next time

My now 15 year old son has been gaming with me, most times with my wife, since he was 11. We have played hundreds of games. Some simple classic styles...Wizard, Diamonds, Love Letter, Black Fleet, Bring out Yer Dead, Ticket To Ride, King of Tokyo...list goes on near endlessly. The game he and my wife pull out when I'm not around? Skip-Bo! That's the Defcon Suicide of Twilight Struggle for board gamers.

So - it's not you that is the failure...vanilla is the most popular ice cream. Plain Cheese is the most popular pizza...Monopoly just follows that trend.

My wife totally HATES learning a new game. So much so she would rather never learn another. Yet she is addicted to Patchwork (both as an app and a board game), Diamonds, Wizard, Stone Age, and others...all of which she vocally complained about learning. "But honey, you love half the games you defiantly learned." lol ...Some people just hate learning new games. Maybe your niece was the same.

No. They stopped playing after an hour because it was time for my niece to go home.

Kids will experiment, sometimes just to shock their parents. As long as they don't get into the hardcore stuff, like Candyland, or Trivial Pursuit.
