Continuing with the theme of “Familiar Faces in Strange Places” part of the tour. Last night saw the Aztecs performing in Babylon’s Hanging Gardens. Chicomecoatl and her bandmates were clearly feeling at home, having chosen a venue that is reminiscent of their native jungles and rainforests.
There was some divine grace in the make-up of this band. With Chalchiuhtlique, the goddess of water on vocals and Tlaloc’s guitar calling on his domain as the God of storms. As they played, a heavy rain soon began to fall. It didn’t take long for this mystical rainfall to pick up force, and for the crowd to be soaked to the skin.
As the storm raged in the hanging gardens, the winds whipped the dangling vines and the heavy raindrops knocked leaves from the trees, it appeared as though the entire garden was alive and dancing to the music. With the crowd reaching a fever pitch, the pace of Tezcatlipoca’s drumsticks increased even further. As the God of Hurricanes played harder and stronger, the clouds above the garden started to whirl and draw together into a swirling vortex of rain, lightning and thunder.
With a drum solo like nothing heard before and likely to never be heard again, the crash of the cymbals heralded another flash of lightning, and the kick of the enormous bass drum aligned perfectly with the booming of the thunder. At the very last drumbeat of this powerful finale the skies suddenly cleared and the winds calmed, leaving the crowd in a rapturous applause, drowning out the dripping of the final drops in this garden of unearthly beauty.
How could any band - divine or otherwise - outperform the Aztecs performance? Who knows? But make sure you pick up the next issue of the Celestial Daily News as we power through the final few concerts of the Soulbound Tour. The anticipation of the fans building to the finale that will go down on #Kickstarter August 1st.
