That's sort of the thing, though - you shouldn't have to plan a photo to include anything but white people. Non-Hispanic White is only 2/3 of our population - it should be practically impossible to take a representative picture of a group of Americans and have that few minorities in it.

(That said - this is hardly the only 'Democratic Interns comparison shot' I've seen, and most of them have a different mix of ethnicities. Still, not one manages to be the nearly-100%-lily-white that Ryan pulls off.)

I see 7 Hispanics and 3 Asians in that crowd, but then again, I dont judge on skin color like you people do.

It also makes sense as we indoctinate young blacks into thinking the Democrats are their party, it takes them a good few working years to figure out that lie.

Speaking of interns, I wonder if Hillary will allow any cute interns in the white house this time around.

No, I mean, literally. Who the fuck thought trying to do a group shot in that room with everyone seated was a good idea? Those people on the back left side are getting denied.

More importantly - who took a look at the resulting photo, thought 'yup, this is exactly how we want to represent ourselves' and published it?

That would be Speaker Ryan. It was first published on his Instagram. The framing is so bad as it was a selfie.

There appears to be one black intern on the GOP side...and her face is half blocked by the person in front of her. If the party for which they volunteer is voluntarily chosen then they might have a big big problem in the next several POTUS elections

Well, that does provide some useful context and blunts the worst of the possible interpretations, here. A first-time selfie shot is hardly to be held to the same standards as an intentional 'marketing shot', so...fair enough on that.

One does wonder about the sampling of the group, generally, but an accidental reveal of poor integration is quite a different thing from what would effectively be an intentional display of that.

I didn't take that as a racist comment. It's a photo layout comment.

The dem is well planned, everyone is visible.

The rep has people leaning in like crazy- and some may not even be in frame. But Ryan is front and center (probably his selfie stick tho.)

---

That being said, holy fuck. Talk about a picture saying a thousand words! Beyond the lack of planning, there's also an apparent lack of anyone not white.

Part of that is going to flow from the voters and the candidates they support. If 90% of blacks vote democratic, you'd expect fewer black republican representatives. Tho ideally, the race of the representative shouldn't influence the race of the Page.

The republican picture is so white it probably has white racism (i.e. wealthy white cliques who look down on upper class white cliques who look down on people below upper middle class).

That picture is so white, I had to turn my monitor down.

That picture is so white, you have to wear shades.

Do you often think about the position of his right hand?

When you're alone late at night.

I think this is the sort of unintentional racism we sometimes discuss here. I don't think Ryan is an overt racist, but I also think he was caught by surprise by the reaction to this shot because nowhere in his thinking was the idea that if the GOP is bringing in that many interns and they are almost entirely white that might signal an underlying problem.

So, McDonalds and WalMart can take on volunteer unpaid interns? Or is it just the well connected elite that can volunteer to better their career options?

Okay, it looks like this was a "thing" back in 2012. Here's the same info from a more reliable source.

In May 2012, Obama similarly received disapproval for a photo of his majority white campaign staff; only two members were Black, which is far below the 13 percent representation in the national population and the 33 percent representation in Chicago.

Yea, I'd say Obama didn't make enough efforts to be inclusive and minorities were grossly under represented. It is embarrassing. Clearly minority volunteers are available based on the congressional page photo so why are they under represented in his organization? It's also been an issue with his whitehouse staff apparently.

The rule for unpaid internships is they are supposed to get some sort of experience that will further their education (usually college, sometimes grad students). Which means they aren't supposed to be just doing photocopying and going out for coffee, but helping with the core work of whatever your business is.

I wouldn't be surprised if McD's and Walmart have unpaid interns at their corporate headquarters, but legally it would be difficult to make a case that flipping burgers or pushing a broom or stocking shelves would qualify as furthering their education.

That said, the whole unpaid intern thing is a grotesque system, and congress members definitely often relegates their interns to menial "answer the phones and go get some coffee" tasks...

Is there some sort of attempt at a valid argument here? Does diversity mean philosophical truth. The Jehovah's Witness Church is very diverse I doubt many here believe that makes it true.

I think the goal here is just to stoke white guilt into voting for socialists. Well, no thanks. Socialism destroys minorities lives worse than the rich and middle class, I care about solving real problems, not stupid photo op interpretations.

When one wants to solve "real problems" it is always best to get as diverse as possible view of said problem. It may turn out that what you thought was the actual problem was merely a symptom. Refusal to do so may show that one is actually part of a larger societal problem itself.

Just a thought
