I'm really interested in buying this game. However, I am a little unsure of how much skill of the player matters. Can you be good at this game, or is it just a bunch of rolling dice to see what happens? Would be glad if someone can clarify this for me.

Markus, there are PLENTY of decisions to make as an imaginary sub commander in this game. You can play conservatively or aggressively, with corresponding ramp-up in risk to you. Whenever you have a sinking opportunity you must decide how many torpedoes to fire, and at which targets. Whenever you are evading attack, you must decide whether or not the additional risk of exceeding test depth is worth the possible benefit. There are a dozen more decisions not listed above which all have a bearing on your relative success and on your game-survival.

I'm not sure whether or not these choices encompass what you call 'skill'.

Plenty of dice do get rolled to decide whether your chosen solution is successful or not, to control the actions of the enemy vessels, and to determine what damage your sub might take from a successful enemy attack.

Due to your worry, I recommend watching some of the videos of gameplay which are available, linked from this BGG page. They MIGHT tell you whether or not you would enjoy the game.

Thanks for your reply Chick. I'll definitely watch more videos. I think the game seems incredibly interesting and different from most other games.
I'm very close to order a copy.

I think people who don't like SV, will say there aren't many meaningful choices. So not much skill involved. You aren't setting up an attack and getting the odds and flank bonus, etc., etc.

There are some choices to be made and they can easily get you killed. I see it more as following a story and you are part of the story.

One of my favorite solitaire games. I tend to be invested in my commander and sub. Much like the Avalon Hill game of B-17.

Yes indeed. Buy this game bud.

As a solo game, luck of course does play a part, but decisions must be made which can change drastically the course of a patrol. I was clobbered by a green quality escort, which came a hairs breath from killing me. In real life, luck had a huge impact. The best sub skipper can't do anything if his torpedoes are duds, or gets supressed by a Jap sub.

Choosing when or not to evade can be the difference between life and death...

Get this game!

You won't regret it.
