So after my divorce I decided to get back into gaming and would rebuild my collection which was of fairly reasonable size before my marriage. Started in mid 2015 and spent about $400 on games not too much and thought I would ramp up slowly from there and probably spend maybe $1000 for all of 2016. So this is how it stands for 2016 as of July 23rd 2016:

Ebay: $1,735.45
BGG: $731.55
Miniatures market: $9.50
Compass Games: $52.00

Total: $2,528.50

HAVE I LOST MY MIND!

Go back in time to 1960. Ask for games as Christmas and birthday gifts Don't get married until 1980. Slowly realize you have enough games for two lifetimes and quit buying.

Free advice, but you have to pay for your own time machine.

Depending on the details of the divorce, you might just be spending the extra money you have on hand...

I hope she's not a member here.......she could have grounds to get more in alimony should she take note how much "extra" cash you have to spend.

I know many, many people who spend much much more on their hobbies - be it motor vehicles, sport or - god forbid - women.

You love your games, as do I.
Carry on.

What, no money spent on Kickstarter games that haven't arrived yet?

(I kid - I back lots of games on Kickstarter, and as far as board games go have been lucky enough to get all the game I've pledged for.)

Then again, I don't buy as much on ebay as you did, so it probably comes out in the wash.

Well, depending on your income, that's how much?

10 to 20%? Money well spent. Everyone needs a hobby.
21 to 40%? Wow, you really love your hobby! Boah!
41 to 60%? Man, get professional help!
61 or more %? ... no further comments.

It piles up. I still remember wanting to get into gaming and putting the Heroscape master set down because $40 was too much to spend on a game....

Tip of the iceberg. Tip of the iceberg.

Same here. "I'll buy it when it comes down in price a bit," I told myself...

No worries, man. You burn your money when it comes to real estate, car, tax declaration and financial services. The amount you just named is rather insignificant. Seriously.

I don't know man.
$2,500+ in a year is a pretty serious amount to spend on games, IMHO.

(Now, if you were talking records, I would easily agree.).

Yes. There's nothing else to say.

I appreciate that it's been a hard time and that you're striving to regain some semblance of your previous "normalcy"but there are some priorities in life... and as much as I like board games... this is crazy.

At least half of my collection I wouldn't even think about acquiring again if everything burned. You need to take a similar stance. Take the "hate" out of it. If you "had to" replace games... what you you do? I'd like to have all of my games too... but at the end of the day... I' know that I would be happy with a handful.

Hey there James,

For me, that is quite a bit to drop in a short amount of time, but as noted above, it really depends on your personal budget.

If it is well within your spending budget, and it is not negatively impacting other aspects of your life, then no worries. What I, myself, would be more concerned with is: Are you getting a satisfactory amount of enjoyment from the newly acquired games? Only you can really answer that one. My wife would say something along the lines of: $100 spent on something used is well spent, while $1 spent on something that goes unused is a waste.

Enjoy the games!
