The Elephants are so strong in this game, that there is not much fun to play with them. So how about playing the game without them? Okay, here is what I found out when playing as the Carthaginian without the Elephants.

The Roman Infantry are too strong for the Carthaginian Infantry to defeat from the front. The battle field is too narrow (the battle field is 75cm width with 1000 points) for the Carthaginian Cavalry to move around the Roman army. Thus the Carthaginian Cavalry usually have to defeat the Roman forces face to face before they could ride into the flank or rear of the Roman units at the center.

This is okay that if one would have to defeat the Roman Cavalry on the flank, but the battle field is so narrow that Roman army could deployed with the map edges blocking access to their flanks. In this case, the Roman player could deploy Infantry units at the flank without worrying their flanks or rear being hit by the Carthaginian Cavalry. And Infantry is simply too strong for the Carthaginian Cavalry to defeat from the front. In this case, a Roman don't even need to purchase Cavalry to guild the flanks of their army.

With their flanks safely guild with Infantry, the Roman could now work on the Carthaginian center. Nearly every infantry unit (except the Triarii) in the Roman army are armed with Javelins, they could weaken the Carthaginian Infantry with them, before hitting the Carthaginian line. This ensure they win the resulting melee. This process however usually take some times, but since the historical Carthaginian tactic of holding the center, while waiting for their Cavalry to fall on the Roman flanks just don't work here. So the Roman have all the times they needed to carry out this tactic.

Charging the Roman Infantry is not an option as they are too strong for the Carthaginian to defeat from the front. So it seems that without the Elephants the Carthaginian is doomed.

Anyone have know how the win with the Carthaginian without employing the Elephants?

Hi,

The card values are balanced which means that if instead of using Elephants you use other Carthaginian units adding up to the same value it makes no difference. Which ones to choose? It depends on each player.

Regarding the Roman deployment you use in this example I invite you to try different strategies such as combining skirmishers with good Event cards, changing the cavalry units formation before charging, etc.
