You can't rob Peter, Paul and Mary to pay yourself.

Even our favorite artists get a Mulligan. Name an artist that you adore, or that you think is a genius (or both), and one of their works that severely disappointed you - or was even horrible.

For me, it was Martin Scorsese and The Color of Money. After a brilliant run of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comedy and After Hours (yes, After Hours), he faceplanted with The Color of Money - a bland, predictable story and uninspired direction. Fortunately, he came back with The Last Temptation of Christ and Goodfellas.

Mike Judge as a writer.

Loved Beavis and Butthead as a teen. Loved King of the Hill as a teen/college kid. Loved Office Space. LOVED Idiocracy. Enjoyed my limited viewings of Silicon Valley so far.

Extract sucked.

Bringing you quality product in the face of crushing indifference since 1970.

Clive Barker seemed to be at the height of his powers when he published Coldheart Canyon.
In a way it has all the hallmarks of a great Barker story but ends up oscillating between flat, and feeling forced.
Sadly it is the only autographed tome I own from one of my all time favorite authors.

Books are in play on this thread right? ninja

I didn't think it sucked, but it was a C+ at best.

The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go

My God, the body of their work is tremendous, and this is the crap that gets played on the radio?

So true. Their first three albums are pure fire, but we end up hearing "I Fought the Law."

Another Brick in the Wall. Part II.

There's nothing wrong about the song other than being a little too on the nose, but of their entire catalog, this is what gets more radio play than any other Floyd song? (Though I will give major kudos to the radio station that played The Happiest Days Of Ours Lives as a lead in to this. That makes it more than just a "fuck authority, amirite?" song.

+90% of Metallica's work after (insert preferred album). I go with The Black album although I will accept earlier works. The Black album's success essentially destroyed whatever chip they had on their shoulder. I have a hard time thinking of songs I like by them after that point outside Fuel and maybe King Nothing.

Stanley Kubrick is an artist who I am really passionate about and believe is a genius, but his first film, Fear and Desire, is quite bad. The camera work is competent (he was a still photographer prior to making motion pictures), but the writing is awful and Paul Mazursky's acting is painful to watch. Still, though, you have to give Kubrick some credit — he was entirely self-taught, and the film was made independently (and this was four years before Cassavetes's Shadows).

Maybe that's not a very interesting answer, because it's not the work of a mature artist … Kurosawa's The Idiot also comes to mind, but that could partly be a product of my own ignorance of Japanese culture.

Music-wise, I would cite Frank Zappa's Thing-Fish.

Can you consider Beavis and Butthead as art?

Devo's "Total Devo" was bad, but was then followed by "Smooth Noodle Map" which was really bad. Fortunately and surprisingly they recently redeemed themselves with "Fresh."
