Global pandemic leaves mankind crippled! Survive the aftermath, apocalypse rats and rebuild! – Nyheim , digital board game announced
July 27, 2016 – OULU, Finland
Happy Hobgoblin is proud to present its first game: Nyheim – a post-apocalyptic digital board game of survival and rebuilding.
Now on INDIEGOGO:
In February 2015, a rat in London is infected by a virus that causes excessive testosterone buildup and aggression. After one month, the virus spreads to a large part of the rat population. Pest control becomes aware of the changed behaviour and captures some of the rats. One person is bitten and becomes infected.
The disease mutates and becomes airborne with an incubation time of three weeks. It worsens, causing muscle ache, confusion and fatigue. Within a week, patient one dies from respiratory failure; within a few more weeks, many other fatalities are recorded in central Europe, the US East Coast and China.
News outlets catch on and the reports of an aggressive and lethal flu cause people to flock to hospitals, propagating the disease. The World Health Organisation issues a warning for people to stay indoors. The infection spreads across major cities, infecting people and rats. Rat populations become more aggressive, making containment difficult.
After 8 weeks WHO issues a global pandemic alarm and attempts to contain and quarantine the disease. Large swathes of population begin to show symptoms, slowing government down. People start to hoard supplies and lock themselves at home in order to avoid contact with others. Meanwhile, rat populations boom and take to the streets, invading supermarkets and homes in order to find food.
The death toll keeps rising. Governments cease to function. Infrastructure falls apart, and nuclear power plants start shutting down reactors and securing spent fuel rods. The infection hits remote areas. Looting becomes widespread.
The power grid fails when the power plants run out of manpower. The people who have survived the infection or who have had immunity to it begin to emerge to the new, post-pandemic world.
You are one of those people.
- A fusion of digital and tabletop worlds involving a deck of cards and dice gameplay system.
- Single player game played out across the fictional Northern European city of Nyheim.
- Strategy: Choose the best survivors to help explore the city, find new members and collect food, equipment, and other supplies.
- Resources must be managed to successfully develop a growing community of survivors.
- Always something new! The Standard Game is randomly generated and has multiple endings. The map’s locations are
randomised as are the available cards, survivors, and their dice. With conditions and situations constantly changing,
every game of Nyheim is unique.
- Narrative-driven Story Mode with custom objectives, unlockable areas and growing challenges.
- Post-apocalyptic Nyheim is dangerous; perma-death means every life is precious. If the player’s whole party dies
then it’s “game over”!
- Developed for mobile and PC.

Greetings lovely, lovely people!
I'll be explaining a bit about the gameplay of Nyheim in the following updates!
Today: Nyheim's cards and dice.
What kinds of objects are in the game?
Well, as stated, the core of the game are the Survivors. Each survivor has a die that has different icons on each side (the main character has two dice). When the player's party of characters explores the districts of their beloved city or huddles up to rest in a safe spot, they roll all of the survivors’ dice. The results can then be used to explore, heal, fight and otherwise progress in the game.
Sometimes just internal ability is not enough. To answer these challenges, or to give your character that extra bit of edge, you can equip Items. Items are expendable resources that allow for a variety of effects, like rerolls, turning results into other results, or even create extra results!
Some items, however, are not immediately useful. Books and guides, typically found in the well-stocked Nyheim University Library, can be studied while resting. When completed, they give the character a Skill, a powerful ability that, unlike items, does not wear out!
You will need all the help in Nyheim you can get, for many things stand in the way of rebuilding. Threats, mostly Nyheim’s mutated rats, are cards that you will need to address. When exploring a place that has Threats, you need to spend the results indicated by the card to fight it. Each time you fight a Threat succesfully, its duration is reduced. When it hits 0, the Threat is defeated!
But if you cannot fight the Threat, it might give you an Injury. Injuries are inflicted on specific characters, and they give a variety of negative effects, such as rerolling good results or eating specific results! Injuries can be healed by resting and applying results, or by replacing the injured character with a fresh one. However, Injured characters do not add to the HQ’s supplies, as they take more than they give.
The main reason to brave the Threats of Nyheim is to find food and other people. This is the most common action you will likely take in the game: Search. Successfully searching will award you with more survivors, food and items, but it might also attract more rats to the feast…
