There are two really good shops in Manchester which i've been to recently. once it Fanboy 3 and the other is Travelling Man. They both sell board games, and I think F3 has a back room where you can play too. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips. I don't think I will have time for the back room but one never knows.

Both shops are within 3 minutes walk of each other and are located close to the Arndale center and Piccadilly station.

Want to thank everyone for the recommendations.
I tried out:
Fanboy 3
Travelling Man
Forbidden Planet

At Forbidden Planet I just peaked in. If the boardgames are in the cellar it's not a good sign. They deserve more attention than that

From Travelling Man I purchased Fleet and from Fanboy 3 I purchased Citadels and KGBvs CIA.

On the whole both of them are good in different ways. Fanboy 3 is more of a gaming cafe/store whilst Travelling Man is more of a store.

I asked in both shops for recommendations and I felt I received adequate help from the staff though I had to repeat that I was on the move so I couldn't purchase any big bixes (I like keeping boxes). I received tips like Pandemic, 7 Wonders Duel, Smash Up which are all good but just too big. It was my general observation that the knowledge on "smaller" games was OK-ish but nothing like --> this, this is the one.

Cred to both of them. Travelling Man for actually having Fleet!! wow! laugh and Fanboy 3 for the good supply on smaller 2/2-4 player games.

Your 3rd shop was Forbidden Planet. They are not a specialist board game retailer.
