Going to boston for the weekend, will be with 4 people, 2 hardcore gamers including myself and 2 noobs(but have willing played some gamer games).

Looking for perhaps a new to me game, or hidden gem.

The catch here is that the game needs to be small/portable and have a the footprint/components that can be played at a restaurant/pub/bar, as we'll be out and about and likely drinking.

Here is what i've already queued:

Sushi Go
Tichu
Coup
One Night Ultimate Something
For Sale | No thanks
Modern Art (maybe)
CodeNames

What's ur go to game for this situation?

Cheers
-
James

Fairy Tale - Great card drafting filler. The new 2nd Edition from Z-Man has better graphic design and 10 new cards.
Biblios - Great auction/bidding filler. Similar in feel to For Sale.

Pairs, but with some of the variants in the Pairs Companion booklet. Goblin Poker is my favorite so far.

I'll often bring along Love Letter. It seems to be well received across all skill levels and doesn't require too much space.

Best of luck!

That made me smile

I don't really have a go to game for this situation but if I was going to the pub with exactly 4 these are things I'd consider:

Spades, Hearts, Indian Chief, Cribbage (partnerships) - playing cards
Clubs (though if you're Tichu players probably not)
42 - domino trick taking game
Hey, That's My Fish!
Red7
Eight-Minute Empire

Spades & 42 are on my to-play list, the rest I've played.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far.

i've been on the fence about Red7. I did pick up diamonds but after one play through it didnt really hit home, but i may try that again.

8 minute empire, the version i have has too many components and i think somehow is just a bit too convoluted for this group/experience. i do like fairy tale, but i think that once u go sushi go, it's hard to go back to

currently, i'm going to see if the FLGS(well in nyc not that more like UF) has Deep Sea Adventure game, that's new to me and push your luck seems ripe for this crowd.

certainly open to more options.

Brew Crafters: The Travel Card Game is a fun, portable and fairly quick card game with a bit of depth to it but still very accessible to non-hardcore gamers.

I wouldn't want to play Diamonds in a bar or restaurant - my family always ends up rolling the gems across the table, you'd end up losing them.

+1 Red7. You can keep it simple or introduce various degrees of complexity depending on how you like it.
BANG! The Dice Game. Definitely works well as a pub game.

Some quick thoughts...

Pairs - especially the version with bar maids.

Black Spy - a great little trick taking game derived from hearts.

Welcome to the Dungeon - a fun push your luck game.

Skull - another push your luck game that uses coasters!

Hope this helps.

Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game - Story telling games are great when drunk.

Ivanhoe - Such an underrated game. Delightfully mean. Very simple.

Lost Legacy or Love Letter. Latter is lighter, former is better.

Codenames + 1 (Though lugging the box around might be a bit much. Maybe you could fit it in a ziplock bag in a purse or something?)

Telestrations Don't take the box, just 4 pads and pens. Maybe a few cards, or just have everyone make up their own words.

Coup: Reformation

Spyfall

Cockroach Poker

Three-Dragon Ante (An underrated card game. Perfect theme for pubs.)

Tales & Games: The Hare & the Tortoise (A fun simple racing/betting game, with some actual strategy to it. The game could fit in something much smaller than it's box and doesn't take up much table space.)

For something different, how about Wurfel Bohnanza (Yahtzee-Type game, but players stay engaged through other people's turns) or maybe Frank's Zoo (cute card game, played in teams)? Both boxes are the same size as Hanabi (another good option, althoug colours may be a bit tricky to see if the lighting is poor)

+1 No Thanks!
+1 Love Letter

I highly recommend Coloretto. These have been our go-to pub games for a while, and for me this is the best of the three. Not sure if it's available in English, but in the UK at least German version are available, and the rules are online.

We've also played Coup and Biblios in the pub, though I'd say it depends how much focus you want on the game. These two, although small, take a bit more concentration / brain power, whereas the others can be played more casually.

Sushi Go! is a good one too, though because it's played over three rounds it's not quite as quick-fire as the others. Again, just depends how long you want to spend.
