Intro
This variant features a new type of survivors: helping survivors or helpers. They offer small benefits for the colony at the cost of an increasing chance of riots, when you start to demand too much from the helpers.

Changes in setup
You need 10 2-sided tokens for the helpers (green side = recovered, red side = exhausted). Change the amount of helpless survivors according to the following table
Location/...........helpless/ helpers/ total
01 Police Station/......0.../...2..../...2
02 Supermarket/......1.../...1..../...2
03 School/................1.../...3..../...4
04 Library/................1.../...1..../...2
05 Hospital/..............1.../...2..../...3
06 Gasstation/..........1.../...1..../...2
Total/.......................5.../...10.../...15

Rules
When a helper is placed in the colony, put him there with the green side up (= recovered). Any player may use one or more recovered helpers for helper-actions by turning them to the red side (exhausted).

Helper-actions
If you have at least one survivor in the colony, you may
exhaust one helper to get one of the following benefits. You can exhaust up to two helpers helpers each turn:

1) Clean up (remove 2 cards from the waste pile)

2) Attract zombies (move up to 2 zombies from any location to any empty entrance spaces at the colony)

3) Barricade (Build a barricade in the colony)

4) Support (increase one of your action dice by +1 (to a max of 6). You have to use this die immediately with a survivor in the colony!

5) Survive (Ignore that helper when you determine the amount of food you have to remove from the supply and the number of zombies you have to place at the colony at the end of the round (put the helper-token in the food supply until the end of the round, as a reminder)

Riot-Phase
Between step 3 and step 4 of the colony phase, add step 3b: Riots

Roll a d20. If the result is greater than the number of exhausted helpers, turn all of them back to the green recovered side. Otherwise roll the exposure die and check the result with the instructions below:

Blank (Bad mood): The helpers just mock around. Turn half (round down) of the exhausted helpers back to the green recovered side.

Wound (Scuffle): The helpers start a fight in the colony. Deal n wounds equally to survivors in the colony (n = number of exhausted helpers). Start with the survivor with lowest influence.
Turn only one exhausted helper back to the recovered side.

Frostbite (Split up): The helpers riot and steal some food before they leave the colony. Deal n wounds equally to survivors in the colony (n = number of exhausted helpers). Start with the survivor with lowest influence. Then remove all exhausted helpers from the colony, together with an even number of food tokens from the supply. Reduce the morale by 1.

Bitten (Coup): The helpers claim their right with blood. Kill the survivor with the highest influence in the colony. Then exhaust all helpers!

New action for survivors:
Guard (Dealing with riots)
To lower the chances and casualties of riots, you may use a survivor as guard by spending an action die (1+). The guard must stay at the colony until the end of the round. Ignore one exhausted helper for every guard, when you roll for the riot or calculate the casualties at the wound- or frostbite-result.

That's it so far. What do you think. Is this idea worth a try? Or is it just a complification without adding anything useful? I'm interested in your thoughts om that.

The idea of a broader, worker-placement sort of layer appeals to me, but the multi-roll resolution sounds too fiddly.

If that is all that bothers you, you could simply just roll the d20 and always do the former frostbite-result (Split up)

It could even be a choice between several options: losing morale, taking wounds, etc.

I uploaded a pdf-file with the rules and a short reference sheet FYI.
