I just got my Kickstarter-backer's copy of Nantucket yesterday (also New Bedford & Rising Tide). I've looked over the rules for Nantucket, and I can't find where it says that the coins for making ships come from --- from the player's own stash of coins, or from the bank?

I'm guessing it's from the player's own stash, but not sure.

You load from your stash. It also must be a unique amount (unequal to the other ships at sea)

Travis got it right.
You're basically using the coins from your supply as resources to outfit the ship.

In the unique case that you are using the Shipyard, your own ships can have the same number as each other, and you choose the order in which they catch a whale.
