The first 2/3 of Scythe, or so, is a careful winding up of everyone's engine. Then you hit this unstable stretch where interactions start to happen and the whole game enters this (mostly controlled) chaos. Sometimes, you don't really know if a particular long-term strategy is going to pay off, but by the time it either does or doesn't, and your outlook is completely hopeless for a really solid finish, there's usually only a couple turns left in the game anyway. The racing aspect here is a godsend, as even without overt kingmaking, the tables turn and the endgame enters someone sights. After that, it's only a couple more turns before the final stars are placed, you can come in last, and everyone can mercifully move on to the next game of the night.
