It looks like they stuck a saucer on a klingon battlecruiser.
And no, I am not going to pay for yet another service to watch it.

I am a huge Star Trek nerd. I'm not paying for a new service to watch it either. I'll wait until it comes out on netflix or regular TV.

The design does look ugly as hell. That they're building it in an asteroid makes me think it's some weird mashed up ship that was just thrown together, and not designed from scratch (which explains a number of other weird issues (like the Bussard Collectors. )

I don't hate it, but it definitely doesn't evoke anything. I think it is a little busy as Star Trek ships go, as far as exterior breaking up of the ship skin with "stuff", but I could get used to it from a more gritty realism perspective. In the end, it loses some of the elegance of the Star Trek aesthetic.

Yeah, but they are in Chit-Chat, which disqualifies them from cogent thoughts and opinions.

Unless, of course the new Discovery has all Kzinti crew members that are on a five year mission so they "can has cheezburgers".

I like the saucer design. The secondary hull, on the other hand, looks like someone was hungover when it was designed.

I like it, if it's a dedicated science vessel then the extra hull space make sense. Honestly the basic saucer/neck/fuselage/nacelle design makes no fucking sense in the first place. Same goes for the Millennium Falcon that things one huge fucking blind spot. I have no idea how you'd park the dam thing.

I've discovered the reason for this fucked up look.

A design from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Apparently the showrunners went back to the an unused design for the ship.

Was that a Roddenberry approved design or just some artist associated with development? I could see it if they are really buying into the Roddenberry vision that they would try and incorporate things he actually wanted to do but lost control of.

The only problem would be that the ship would spend a lot of time flying around trying to catch the laser pointer dot and sleeping.

I know what they are (I play SFB's).

My point was there does seem to be a very alien theme to this trailer.

Ralph McQuarrie, the designer, worked on a number of Sci-Fi designs during that era, including Star Wars, apperently.

That look familiar to anyone who watched that trailer?

I'm starting to wonder if they're not going way back into the well for this series.

I remember seeing the Ralph McQuarrie 1970's designs eons ago and thinking "I sure am glad they didn't use that design!" It's annoying that it all comes down to "We have to have a different aesthetic!" and so they go with hard lines to distinguish themselves.

I disliked the overall dark brooding imagery (even the insignia is all scratched, hard and weathered) and the awful music that is more about pumping up the action than pointing towards positive themes of discovery.

I'm old now and I further hate the faster pace of everything in movies. The pan down from the shot of the sun was too fast, even the docking arms retracted at a rate that seems dangerously fast for the supposed scale the ship is at. Then the ship blasts out of there. These ships are supposed to be big and heavy. Slow it down and use music that evokes bigger sweeping movements.

Slow down, build up and let this stuff breath...

And get off my lawn!

Points -

- Agree with others, I won't be getting a streaming service just for this. And, I'm not waiting, I'll just get it "other ways". And I'm sure many other people will too. Which means there's a very good chance it will get canceled in the first season because of 'low ratings' even if many people are actually watching it.

- I think the ship design is weird, but I don't mind it. BUT, I am worried what it portends--I've never been a big Klingon fan. I like Star Trek when it's out exploring the universe, seeking out new life, going where no one has gone before. I like it much less when it overuses known aliens for tired social commentary.

- I am VERY pleased it is in the original universe. BUT, I have heard others mention that if it is placed in the timeline as a sequel to Enterprise, still prequelly to the original, then it can actually sit in BOTH universes, and that way they can pander to both original Trek and NuTrek.

My wife, who isn't a Trekkie by any means, and I were just talking last night about how great the music/soundtrack is in TOS. She's watched a few episodes lately and brought it up. I think it is something that really never was equaled in any of the follow on series/movies (let alone most of TV in general). Maybe Star Trek II during the actual ship combats. I hope this new series really tries to get the music right. It really is the frosting on the cake. Boring frosting makes boring cake, but a good frosting makes it epic.

Do Kzinti use a litter box? Come to think of it our trifling over bathrooms in this century would seem petty in the ST universe. Mayde they'll do an episode about it?

Fun fact, Kzinti are creation of Larry Niven and are all over the place in his Known Space books, specifically in some of the Ringworld books, and (obviously) in the Man-Kzin Wars books--which incidentally have hardly any Niven in them, but a bunch of Jerry Pournelle and others. I haven't ready any of them, cuz I'm less of a war/space opera scifi guy and more of a explore and meet aliens kind of scifi guy.
