The solution for army customization based on Deployment Cards certainly is original, but is it functional? What (if) new mercenary armies, units and so on appear? It also seems to push Battlelore in the direction of medieval battles as opposed to fantasy battles (not exactly the direction I was hoping for).

Will DOW sell expansion packs for Call to Arms with new Deployment Cards whenever they release a new unit or weapon? Sounds like a solution directed at sales and not at gameplay...

This design has already made my rate of Battlelore to go down.

I'm willing to give DoW the benefit of the doubt. It would be very stupid to design a pick-up game system, like ACtA, without an eye towards future expansions.

I think they will probably include additional cards with each expansion to allow you to use ACtA with the new units if you wish. Adding one or two cards, shouldn't effect the expansion prices that much.

ACtA will most likely make me raise my rating of DoW. But I'll wait until I have my copy before I do that

I have every confidence that things will be well-orchestrated. Bear in mind that Richard Borg playtests things for a long time even before a publisher is lined up. Bear in mind also that DoW--well, any company--must plan their production well in advance.

Also, the general categories of types--light/medium/heavy, mounted/foot, melee/missile, units or entities such as monsters--fit many potential unit types, races, creatures, and so on.

With a product such as Battlelore, with such a breadth of potential for expansions in terms of both units and terrain, I'm sure they will make sure the whole range is compatible.

This was asked and answered on the blog...

mjkoopman Asked:

Will CtA contain Deployment cards with the new unit types in the goblin/dwarf/100-years-war sets? What about future unit types? Will future unit expansions contain more deployment cards, maybe?

Eric Hautemont answered:

Future units will come with their own Specialist cards. In some instances, how a unit gets deployed is actually a crucial part of the unit’s features/capabilities.

This is one of the reasons why we shuffled the release schedule around to ship Call to Arms earlier than initially planned.

We will also release additional Deployment sets (including Nations-specific ones) in the future.

I would expect that it is functional. They do play test this stuff y'know. So what if new mercenary armies, units and so on appear? DoW will include their CtA stuff. What else could they do?

I would imagine that they would include the CtA cards with any new units or weapons they release. A solution directed at sales? No one is holding a gun to your head and making you buy the extra crap.

I think your worries are premature. Why don't we wait and see?

I agree - wait and see, at least for the reviews. Personally, I'll be grabbing it as soon as humanly possible.

I expect it to raise my rating of basic BL by two or three points, but the only way BL is going to get a 10 from me is if Call to Arms works with Epic. I haven't seen any info on that.

Edit>>>

Ha! This thread inspired me to actually go out and check if any news had come out since the last time I checked. Heh, they are TOTALLY COMPATABLE! Glee! Epic Call to Arms, the game I wish BL had been in the first place! Finally done! Gimme gimme gimee!

By the way, does anybody know if CtA comes with Deployment Cards for the Hill Giant and the Earth Elemental?

Miguel,

I'm hoping for the opposite, that the game will do more for historical players than has been the case to date. Just goes to show that you can't please everyone....

The deployment cards come with generic creature symbols. This will cover the Spider, Giant, and EE. I believe is the Creature compendium, the player with the most Goblins gets to choose first and then back and forth after that.

Thanks, BrianMola.

(By the way, in Spanish, at least Spain's Spanish, "Brian mola" means "Brian is awesome").

I know! I lived in Barcelona for a year back in 92-93 and was told the same thing. Though I was a bit turned off when everyone laughed when my name was called for roll "Mola... Brian Mola" They told me at break it meant "cool... Brian cool"
