OK, so I have an elite crew. From what I can see, the only benefit is avoiding aircraft and shooting down aircraft. Is that correct?

What exactly do the notations on the Elite Crew counter stand for?

The notations for the crew counters are explained on page 4 of the rules. First column, just before rule 3.4, near the bottom.

-1F gives -1 on Flak Table A2
+1D gives +1 on Air Attack Table A1
These are both Crew modifiers

The +1D on a different marker is an Escort modifier. It applies a +1 on table E2 to an Elite Escort for detection of the U-Boat.

It appears that the +1 for Escort detection (table E2) may be in error as a +1 for the detection roll is not a good thing.

Should be a -1 for the detection roll on the Escort detection. That is a really good bonus to have.

The +1D on a marker is for an Elite Escort. I missed that in my answer. I was thinking that BOTH D indicators apply to crew markers. Totally forgot about Escort markers.

So I was right - en Elite crew only helps in aircraft encounters. There are no bonuses for ship encounters, but there are negatives for a Green crew.

Hmm. So the rulebook says that the letter "D" on the crew counters apply to dive modifiers (for crashing diving versus aircraft) but it also says it applies to escort detection. But the charts and tables only give the green/elite crew modifiers in the aircraft encounter table (for the crash dive modifier). The escort detection chart doesn't list any modifiers for detection based on crew quality.

From my research on boardgamegeek I found an old entry from the game designer that states that the crew quality does NOT impact the detection so I was mistaken in my post above. the letter "D" found on the crew chits applies to aircraft crash diving rolls ONLY.

Oh well - I have never gotten up to an elite crew out of all of my playthroughs and I've never had less than a trained crew so it was never anything I ever really considered. So now I know....

EDIT: Here's the link to where this was answered:http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1100102/elite-crew-question

Hey guys,

Considering aircraft are one of the MAJOR threats to your existence, I felt that diving quicker and shooting better flak were pretty decent "perks".

Better torpedo shooting is tied to the awards system, as is -1 to detection. Giving that also to an elite crew would be unbalancing, not to mention a bit unrealistic IMO.

Take care,

Greg

Please note, I am not criticizing, was just asking to be sure I did not miss something. I could see where the level of the crew could affect things like shooting (both torps and deck gun), escaping detection (quiet, anticipate movements of escort and sub, the guy on the phones, etc.), and even finding targets. I think one could make an argument for all of those.

But I am fine with the rules as written - don't want to create an invincible sub (well, I would if I were actually in the sub, and not just pushing some cardboard chits around)

Hey Robert,

I wasn't taking it as criticism, just trying to explain my thought process. And you are certainly entitled to be critical if you so desire, trust me after a couple of years of this I have a thicker skin now

Take care, and good luck,
Greg

No, no criticism from me. Great game - lots of nail biting while holding the die. For a tactical solitaire game, it is about the best there is.
