This would unambiguously seem to be disrespectful of the flag:

The slideshow at the top provides the best view I thought; fourth picture in (the one with the big white balloon in front) shows at least two large flags discarded on the floor.

Perhaps more will come out in the next few days.

I think people treat the little flags differently than the large heavy cloth flags. I'm sure this is common behavior by people from all parties in general.

The flags in question are those small hand-held stick flags. They come in a variety of sizes and are not full-fledged flag-pole flags.

You want controversy?

How about the nearly 1-minute delay of the balloon drop at the Republican National Convention?

I'm just surprised that Trump didn't ad-lib something in order to allay fears that the balloons wouldn't be dropping.

(Perhaps the playing of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Rolling Stones was all too appropriate music to be played during the balloon drop after all!)

As others have said I cannot understand this idolatry of a rag on a pole.

I susepct that at every public event you will get the throw away paper flags thrown into bins or on the floor.

More what?

What's the actual problem here, and why are you presenting it as if it is some sort of scandal worthy of the fall of a government?

To be pedantic, this sort of respect for the flag died early in the 20th century when it started getting printed and pasted on everything. If it was just used as an ensign and a cloth flag I can see the dispute.

I'm confused.

Were flags banned at the DNC or not?

No, but we were told the toilet paper was in bad taste. Personally I would have thought so too but it sold like proverbial hotcakes, and people were feeling patriotic as they TP'ed everything in sight. I do understand though why that old lady objected, but she was moving very slow.

Congratulations! You said the secret word "pedantic"!

As your reward, the King of Cartoons now presents to you in four parts the classic 1939 Warner Brothers cartoon starring Porky The Pig in ...

Premiering on July 3, 1939, only two months before the start of World War II, "Old Glory" was cartoon director Chuck Jones's first short to feature Porky Pig. It was also Porky's first appearance in a color "Merrie Melodies" cartoon since his debut in 1935's "I Haven't Got a Hat" and his first short in Technicolor.

During the late 1960s, "Old Glory" was regularly screened between rock acts at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Many of the Fillmore's patrons drew great amusement from a pig saluting the American flag because "pig" in 1960s slang was a derogatory term for a police officer and his saluting the flag was a symbol of the kind of America most people were against at the time: the kind that slavishly followed the government and didn't care for the rights of others. (Mind you, this was not merely a counter-culture attitude but one fostered by one extreme enforcing another, that is, the establishment's disdain for young people questioning much less openly protesting the Vietnam War.)

This uniquely serious cartoon won the Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Color) of 1939.
