First Event

Quote:
100 Meters (8 dice, 1 attempt)

Divide dice into two sets of four. Throw the first four dice until you are satisfied with the result. Freeze the first set. Throw the other four dice and proceed in the same manner. Try to freeze sets of dice with high values but which contain no sixes. Maximum of seven throws, one initial throw for each set and up to five re-throws which may be divided between the sets as desired.

Scoring: Total the value of the dice, but subtract any sixes from the result.

Dice roller tip: 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6}
example = 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6} = (1 + 3 + -6 + 5) = 3

Alfred to play first. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck everyone!

Okay, first let me do some stretching:

Now let's see how I can start this off!
1st Set, 1st Roll 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6} = (1 + 3 + -6 + 5) = 3
Well that wasn't very good. Let's see if we can get off to a better start!
1st Set, 2nd Roll 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6} = (2 + 1 + 1 + 3) = 7
This is clearly karma teaching me not to post Jim Carrey pictures.
1st Set, 3rd Roll 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6} = (2 + 1 + 3 + 3) = 9
What is the world record for futility in this event again?
1st Set, 4th Roll 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6} = (4 + 3 + -6 + 3) = 4
Looks like I'm going to have to lock this result, regardless of the result!
1st Set, 5th Roll 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6} = (4 + 2 + 1 + 5) = 12

Locking 1st Set with 12

Now, let's finish strong!
2nd Set, 6th Roll 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6} = (1 + 1 + 2 + -6) = -2
And with my final epic roll I get ...
2nd Set, 7th Roll 4custom6{1;2;3;4;5;-6} = (2 + 4 + 2 + 5) = 13

Locking 2nd Set with 13

Total score: 25

A 3-way tie for second/third/fourth position, rolling dice to determine player order for the next event:

Player 1 = Stephen - 25
Player 2 = 1custom3{Alfred;Bart;Lucas} -> ( Bart) -> ( Bart) - 22
Player 3 = 1custom2{Alfred;Lucas} -> ( Alfred) -> ( Alfred) - 22
Player 4 = Lucas - 22

Second Event:

Quote:
Long Jump (5 dice, 3 attempts)

Run-up: Start with five dice. After each throw you must freeze at least one die. Try to freeze dice with low values. If the total of the frozen dice exceeds 8, your attempt is invalid. Stop throwing with a total of 8 or less on all frozen dice, you then jump.

Jump: Pick up your frozen dice and throw them all. Freeze at least one die and rethrow the remainder until you freeze all dice. Try to freeze dice of high values.

Scoring: Total the value of all frozen dice used in your jump.

Stephen starts us off with his first attempt.

Step one: Visualize Success

Step two: Roll Dice!
5d6 = (3 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 5) = 17
I'll freeze the 2 and roll the other 4.
2nd Roll 4d6 = (4 + 3 + 5 + 3) = 15
Ouch! I'll freeze the 3 and roll the other 3.
3rd Roll 3d6 = (6 + 1 + 6) = 13
I'm going to freeze the 1 and gamble by rolling the last 2 dice again.
4th Roll 2d6 = (4 + 6) = 10

That's a FAULT for attempt #1!

Side note: Before rolling here I tested my rolling ability ( steckman previously rolled 5d6 = (2 + 1 + 3 + 6 + 2) = 14). Now THAT would have been a good start!

You didn't visualise the run-up .

Running up... 5d6 = (1 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 2) = 12

I'll get in a reference jump, taking the 1,2,2,3 and going straight to the jump.

Jump first roll 4d6 = (1 + 3 + 5 + 5) = 14

Freezing the two 5's.

Jump second roll 2d6 = (2 + 3) = 5

Freezing the 3.

Jump third and final roll 1d6 = (1) = 1

I must have focused too much on the run-up shake.

Long jump attempt 1: 14

I did this as well. I decided to do a full run through of the event. I'm planning to a decathlon every month or so and am doing this in the form of a private geeklist: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-Deca-thlon!

Let's see if I can recover from my 1st attempt:

Running up:
1st Roll 5d6 = (4 + 2 + 5 + 6 + 2) = 19
I'll freeze both of the 2s and roll the other 3 dice:
2nd Roll 3d6 = (4 + 4 + 3) = 11

I feel like I need a result here, so I'll freeze the 3 and proceed with my 3-dice jump:
1st Jump Roll 3d6 = (1 + 4 + 5) = 10
Trying to beat 14 so I'll just freeze the 5 and roll the other 2:
2nd Jump Roll 2d6 = (6 + 5) = 11
I'll just stop there with (5, 6, 5)

Long Jump attempt #1: Fault
Long Jump attempt #2: 16

Coaching staff just doubled my cereal for breakfast. It seems to do the trick...

Running = 5d6 = (2 + 6 + 2 + 6 + 4) = 20
Freezing 2,2

Still running = 3d6 = (4 + 6 + 3) = 13
Freezing 3

Still running = 2d6 = (1 + 3) = 4
Freezing 1

Jumping = 4d6 = (4 + 6 + 1 + 5) = 16
Freezing 5,6

Still flying high = 2d6 = (3 + 4) = 7
Freezing 4

Still in the air = 1d6 = (2) = 2

The breakfast trick didn't work, I was too heavy in the air...

One more attempt for everyone, so far it's:
Stephen 16 / Bart 21 / Alfred 26 / Lucas 21

Alfred, so close to the PBF record of 27 there. I've seen a 29 reported; you actually had a shot at 30 there.

Time to try that cereal thing you all are talking about:

Run up ...
1st Roll 5d6 = (1 + 4 + 3 + 6 + 3) = 17
I'll freeze the 1 ...
2nd Roll 4d6 = (3 + 1 + 1 + 1) = 6

Yay! 5 dice to jump with!

And now for the jump ...
1st Jump Roll 5d6 = (6 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 3) = 17
Locking the 6 ...
2nd Jump Roll 4d6 = (3 + 2 + 2 + 1) = 8
Locking the 3 ...
3rd Jump Roll 3d6 = (2 + 2 + 4) = 8
Locking the 4 ...
4th Jump Roll 2d6 = (4 + 5) = 9
And locking the rest for a 22!

Long Jump attempt #1: Fault
Long Jump attempt #2: 16
Long Jump attempt #3: 22

That cereal stuff really works!

Freeze the two 1's and continue the run-up 3d6 = (4 + 2 + 6) = 12

laugh Good jumps everyone. Only... you all were rather bold at breakfast emptying that cereal bowl. Thanks for the nothing.

Ah well, on an empty stomach it is then...

No one is clapping either. They're all here to support the underdogs.

Hah, more adrenalin for me!!! Better clear the stands at the short end!!!

"Well, here's our current leader..."
"Will he top his last performance?"
"Or consolidate and preserve energy for the next event?"
"We'll have to see, Ben."
"He sure seems all pumped up, Jim.. oh gere he goes..."
"Running..."..."faster still."
"Awww too fast, Jim, I think he stepped into the plasticine."
-slo-mo camera zoom-
"Yep, you are right Ben. A size 46 will do that for you."
"What's that in UK size?"
"Big, Ben."

Yes, I hesitated a bit there. I had equalled that 27 record, but it was a too good a chance to pass a last roll with four 6's in hand. A 50% chance to break the record, 1/6 to roll a 3 again and 1/3 for a lower score, I figured, why not try?

Glad I did anyway, since the record now stands at 28 with that great jump in the other group.

It's now up to you Lucas, for that final jump. Go for it!

No pressure here, all I need to do is beat 26, piece-o-cake!

Here we go!

Running = 5d6 = (1 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 1) = 11
Freezing 1,1,2
Still running = 2d6 = (5 + 2) = 7
Freezing 2
I can see the sand = 1d6 = (3) = 3

...missed it by 1 inch...

Long jump attempt #3 = foul

Long jump attempt #1 = 21
Long jump attempt #2 = 17
Long jump attempt #3 = foul

Oh well, time to move on the next one!

Long jump results:
Stephen - 22
Bart - 23
Alfred - 26
Lucas - 21

After two events:
Alfred - 48
Stephen - 47
Bart - 45
Lucas - 43

This decathlon is shaping up as a nail-biter...

3rd Event

Quote:
Shot Put (8 dice, 3 attempts)
Throw one die after the other. At any point you can stop throwing and finish your attempt. Your attempt must end after all eight dice have been thrown.

If you throw a one you suffer an invalid attempt.

Scoring: Total the value of all thrown dice.

Alfred to lead us off.

Okay, with my disastrous Shot Put in mind that I played during training (5 dice TOTAL rolled to produce 3 fouls!) I will be somewhat conservative here to defend my lead.

"It will be interesting to see what happens during this event, Bill."
"Yes, they are not far apart, this is proving to be a 'nail-biter' of a decathlon, as I overheard one of the contestants from down under say at breakfast this morning."
"You were having breakfast with the decathletes this morning?"
"Yea Jim, I heard they serve fantastic cereals there."
"Hmmmm, interesting. ... Okay, first up is the Dutch guy..."

Attempt 1: 2+5 = 7

"A conservative throw there."
"Better than dropping the steel on your toes though."
