I hope FFG put the rules on line before release (they usually do). I'm picking the game up from my flgs on the 4th and we're going to break it out there and then. Would be great to be able to read the rules beforehand.

Rules never go up before the final preview, which is today. Expect rules Wednesday (maybe tomorrow even).

Occasionally, the rules go up with the final preview, so it could be today even.

I'm sure FFG used to put rules up for (at least some) of their new games before they released (maybe a couple of weeks or more). It was great as you could read them in advance & be ready to open the box and play straight away.

But this seems to have changed over the last year or so. My experience of late has been that the rules rarely appear on their site until at least a couple of weeks AFTER release.

Not sure why... it's not as if they can re-print them with any last minute changes/corrections & get them into the boxes that are already being shipped. Fear of impact on sales? Obviously reviews/similar are scarce for a new title, so the rules can be very useful to help decide on an early purchase. I would think the usual quality of their rules could only help sales..?

What goes, 'Ha ha ha, bonk'? Me falling off my chair laughing. Everyone of my FFG games has a printed FAQ/Errata sheet in the box. Look at the amount of rules questions over Fury of Dracula 3Ed, for example. It's a matter of taste, I know, but I don't like their new format of a half baked rulebook + reference, mainly because the reference is never complete and you often have to thumb through all the rulebooks to find the rule you need. It's a tribute to their games that we are prepared to put up with this.

Anyway, this post is lighthearted, I'm looking forward to my pre-order arriving and yes, I'd love to see the rules up front.

I can't think of any recent games that had their retail release before the rules were posted.
Sometimes they have a game available at a convention before its retail release, and maybe in those scenarios the rules haven't been available beforehand.
I expect that they have the rules ready to go up before Thursday.

Ha! Fair point, I was perhaps being overly-generous. I too have all the printed FAQ's in the boxes, and am not a big fan of the 2-book thing (though I admit the reference is handy when rare events crop up, or after not playing a game for some time). And I was actually one of the people submitting questions over FoD 3rd Edition when it released! Although to be fair, Runebound's latest incarnation came out around the same time, and I couldn't really fault it's rules.

But as you say, we forgive them because we like the games & they do eventually release errata & support their games, and perhaps we get too used to the fact that games of any complexity aren't 100% perfect at release. A few errors would be unlikely to put me off a purchase if I liked the way the game played based on a read-through.

I may be wrong on some of these recent games, but I tend to download things for easy reference ASAP, and I think these had me waiting till at least a week or two after release: Fury of Dracula 3e, Runebound 3e, Warhammer Quest:TACG, various expansions for Elder Sign & Descent, and probably some others I've forgotten.

Anyway - let's hope they post them soon & prove me wrong

You can find the reference book and the rules book on the steam store listing:

Enjoy!

Credit to Pletheria on the FFG forms for pointing me there.

Yet another benefit to including an app, it seems!

Good show. Glad to be wrong.

The web link from Steam seems to go to the 1st Edition game on FFG... confused me at first as I spotted the Support downloads and thought they must have just uploaded them for 2nd Edition.

Check again. It has the cover art of the 1st Edition, but it says 2nd edition.

There are 3 links - the 2nd edition reference book, the 2nd edition how to play, and the 1st edition rule book.

Everyone has access to the rules on their website even without downloading the app.

Oh I looked and didn't see it. I'll look again blush

Thanks for the edit. I didn't notice the tabs on the FFG page.

No they're not in the app itself, but you can download them from FFG's site now, scroll down under "Support"...
