Is the feeeding of pets optional?

If it's the case, what if I don't feed a pet? Do I loose its card?

It's an upkeep cost similar to other items, work and relationships.

Failure to pay means you lose the card, take a Short Term Unhappiness, and Stress

Slightly off-topic: if I buy the game at retail now, I don't get pets, right?

Correct. The Pets were one of the KS Campaign's stretch rewards.

I think they are available for purchase on Artipia's website though.

has anyone tried any variants for Pets? The pets seems too cool not have them more available than just wait for them to show up in the draw piles.
I was thinking to have the last stack of item/activity cards (3rd slot over in 2-3 player, 4th slot in 4 player) to just have the stack of pets sitting there face down and turn over the top Pet card turned face up to be available for all the time with a spend action. The other slots for items/activity cards to be bought and refilled as normal. Can call it the "Pet Store" variant.
