What the heck, if anybody knows about hate, we'll find them in RSP, am I right?

From the What Is Love? thread:

I think a lot of the time we think of hate as being the opposite of love, but sometimes love and hate would seem to be more closely related, with one almost depending upon the other. Two sides of the same coin, maybe, but perhaps more, since hate is not always necessarily a negative emotion - it can even move us to take positive actions.

What got me thinking about it is the image shown below didn't include people's feelings of hatred, only contempt and disgust, which are probably similar, but not really the same emotion.

Hate is a gestalt emotion comprising of

Anger, Envoy, fear, disgust and contempt, with a little bit of shame thrown in.

Well I'm a sucker for anything that includes a picture I linked in another thread.

I think "Shame" and "Anger" would also be included in there.

Look at their example photo..

The nose isn't raised as with contempt.

Cartoonists often distill emotions down to their basic instantly recognizable components.

You don't really hate things you don't care about.

Hate is closer to love than it is to indifference.

But in some cases, you hate things which threaten the things you love. So hate is not always rejected or inverted love.

So much trouble
Hate this job
Tried to get out
Trapped like a dog
No, I don't like
Pumpin' gas
Do ya hate to wait?

Life's a game
We play your rules
Bottle half empty
Or the bottle half full
It does no good
No good to shout
But I scream I hate

Say I'm hostile
Gotta relax
Gotta get a grip
Here's the facts
I hate bein' here

[Chorus]
I hate people that make you feel small
I hate having my back against the wall
You know, I hate being talked down to

I hate your rules
I hate 'em all
Hate being marked to take the fall
[/Chorus]

Planet's not big enough for me and you

So much trouble
Over me
Surrounded by jerks
Can't ya see?
Smile to my face
I know you lie
Knife in the back

Another game
Rules, rules, rules
Not for me
Ya fuckin' fool
Open your mouth
Just one more time
And my foot's goin' down

In one ear
Out the other
A waste of time
Don't even bother
I hate being here

[Chorus]

Planet's not big enough for me and you
But most of all
I hate you...

YOU! I hate you
YOU! I hate you
I hate, I hate, I hate, I hate you

[Solo]

[Chorus]

Planet's not big enough for me and you
But most of all
I hate you...

Think I know
How you got this far?
Think I know how you
Got where you are?

Think I'll hate you
When you're dead?
I know I'll hate ya

Smile to my face
Know you lie
Say I got problems?
Ask yourself why

Hate the games
I hate the rules
You're gonna lose

Say I'm hostile
Gotta relax
Better get a grip
Here's the facts
Not much more of you

[Chorus]
Planet's not big enough for me and you
But most of all
I hate you...

I hate people that make you feel small (I HATE YOU)
I hate having my back against the wall (I HATE YOU)
I hate being talked down to

(I HATE YOU)I hate your rules
Every one (I HATE YOU)
Hate having counted you number one
I hate being placed at number two
But most of all
I hate you
I hate you
I HATE YOU!

I HATE!

I don't think it is lesser, I think they got shafted from the Big Four. Both Overkill and Testament were at least as good as Megadeth and Anthrax, but not as good as Metallica and Slayer. Overkill stayed good longer than Metallica and didn't have a down period like Testament. As a whole, over the three decades of music, I'd rank the top Thrash bands like this:
1. Slayer
2. Overkill
3. Metallica
4. Anthrax
5. Exodus
6. Testament
7. Megadeth

Those rankings change if you snapshot any one decade.

EDIT: I had to add Exodus. There are other good thrash bands (Destruction, Sodom, Annihilator, Sacred Reich, Kreator) but they don't quite break into this list.

Love the metal Hijack. I could listen to them all and do. I would've included Suicidal Tendencies, DRI, Sodom, Celtic Frost and Sepultura over Overkill. Don't forget gems like Carnivore, Bloodfeast, Whiplash, RDP and Sarcafago. You're from Cleveland, Spudmonsters were excellent.

DRI is coming out with an EP to support their next tour. It's their first new material since the 90's I think. Spike had a long battle with cancer. Yeah, all those bands are good and I would have added them to the pack just fighting under number 7, though Maybe Megadeth falls into the pack and Sepultura would take their place, again using the whole 3 decades as a body of work. (in fact, I almost posted Straighthate by Sepultura instead)

Sounds like I wasn't too far off.

Interestingly, I can think of plenty of people I love, but I'm having a hard time thinking of anybody I actually hate. I know there's one or two people I don't get along with all that well, but I attribute that more to our personalities clashing - or maybe they hate me and I don't know it - but other than that, I generally feel pretty good about others with not much hatred mixed in. There are plenty of things I hate, concepts and ideas, etc, but overall, hate for other people seems much more difficult for me to cultivate than love.

It can take real effort to hate, so at some point maybe we decide whether it's worth the effort or easier to just go about our day and not give much thought to anyone we might be inclined to hate, it's a big world, after all. Of course, if we have to rub shoulders with them on a regular basis, we might choose to look for other ways to resolve the situation, rather than let hate fester. I suppose if there is "love at first sight", then there might also be "hate at first sight", but it would seem to be a rarer phenomenon.

I think, too, we almost resent it if somebody gets inside our head enough for us to start spending time thinking about how much we hate them, so we're more likely to work to overcome it, unlike we do with feelings of love(in most cases, that is - you might want to stop yourself falling in love with your spouse's best friend, for instance).

(If you're sleeping are you dreaming
If you're dreaming are you dreaming of me?
I can't believe you actually picked me.)

(”Hi Justin, this is your mother, and it's 2:33 on Monday afternoon.
I was just calling to see how you were doing.
You sounded really uptight last night.
It made me a little nervous, and a l... and... well... it made me nervous, it sounded like you were nervous, too.
I just wanted to make sure you were really OK,
And wanted to see if you were checking in on your medication.
You know I love you, and...
Take care honey
I know you're under a lot of pressure.
See ya. Bye bye”)

I have to block out thoughts of you so I don't lose my head
They're crawling like a cockroach leaving babies in my bed
Dropping little reels of tape to remind me that I'm alone
Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home
There's a burning in my pride,
A nervous bleeding in my brain
An ounce of peace is all I want for you
Will you never call again?
And will you never say that you love me
Just to put it in my face?
And will you never try to reach me?
It is I that wanted space

Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you

Hate me in ways
Yeah, ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you

I'm sober now for three whole months,
It's one accomplishment that you helped me with
The one thing that always tore us apart
Is the one thing I won't touch again
In a sick way I want to thank you
For holding my head up late at night
While I was busy waging wars on myself,
You were trying to stop the fight
You never doubted my warped opinions
On things like suicidal hate
You made me compliment myself
When it was way too hard to take
So I'll drive so fucking far away
That I never cross your mind
And do whatever it takes in your heart
To leave me behind

Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you

Hate me in ways
Yeah, ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you

And with a sad heart, I say bye to you and wave
Kicking shadows on the street
For every mistake that I had made
And like a baby boy,
I never was a man
Until I saw your blue eyes crying,
And I held your face in my hand
And then I fell down yelling,
"make it go away!"
Just make her smile come back
And shine just like it used to be
And then she whispered,
"How can you do this to me?"

Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you

Hate me in ways
Yeah, ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you
For you
For you
For you

[Children voices:]
If you're sleeping are you dreaming,
If you're dreaming are you dreaming of me?
I can't believe you actually picked me

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

[Girl:] Hey, Justin!

And over a decade later...

Overkill were great in the 80's.

There is some amazing metal coming out these days. I don't even know where to start. Fleshgod Apocalypse, Eluveitie, Korpiklaani, Amorphis, Insomnium, Lamb of God, the last dissection album, etc ...
