There are 10 kinds of people who understand binary: Those who do, and those who don't.

None, you say?
Well somebody is lying, according to this article in the Wall Street Journal.

WSJ wrote:
"Sales of cargo shorts have fallen over the past year for the first time in a decade, according to market-research firm NPD Group. Still, it says retailers sell more than $700 million worth of cargo shorts every year in the U.S."

The second part of this later statement is most disturbing to me:
WSJ wrote:
"At Wal-Mart, a pair can be bought for $8.50, while Neiman Marcus sells linen cargo shorts for $995 a pair."

Who the *@%&! pays $1,000 for cargo shorts?! Linen ones, for God's sake?
Linen is among the worst materials in the world to keep care of. Do the owners have maids and butlers who iron their shorts every time they are washed, or do they send them out to be dry cleaned?

Neiman Marcus pricing reminds me of a Steve Martin bit, doing a take on economics:

“If I could fill up a 3000 seat hall at $3.00 a ticket, I’d make $9,000.
If I could fill up the hall at $7.50 a ticket, I’d make $22,500.
but if I could fill it at $800.00 a ticket, I’d make $2,400,000.
This is what I’m shooting for – one show, goodbye!”

Poll
Do you own a pair of cargo shorts?
Nope
No, but I did in the past
Yes, but I've never (or rarely) worn them
Yes, but I haven't worn them in years
Yes, but I only wear them in specific situations where they are appropriate
Yes, and I wear them proudly

Poll
If you were rich-- like Bill Gates rich-- would you ever spend $995 on a pair of linen cargo shorts?
I would never be rich enough to stomach the thought of paying that much money for something that I could get for a lot less.
No, probably not. Unless they were the most amazing pair of shorts that I'd ever seen.
Sure, it's only money at this point. I can throw them out at the end of the day instead of washing them.
Of course. It's the exclusivity of them, you see.

My main shorts are what my daughter calls "dad shorts." One shade or another of khaki. I have two pair now, both are dockers.

I also have a pair of prana shorts for climbing in, and a pair of Adidas gym shorts.

No cargo. I just never had enough stuff to need all those pockets.

When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

I've got a couple of pairs in various states of disintegration, and I still wear them occasionally. Nowadays I tend more toward Bermuda-esque shorts. I've found (somewhat surprisingly,) that Dickies are making some great shorts. I especially appreciate the cell phone pocket on the side.

At work I still wear Carhart shorts, although I'm investigating the purchase of a Utilikilt.

Edit: And of course! As soon as I respond to this thread, ads for cargo shorts start popping up on my Facebook feed. shake

ha, kinda the opposite for me. She's gotten used to my cargos and I'm basically half purse now. She never has to do the purse/phone/wallet check anymore.

I can fit an entire 12 pack of soda in my cargos.
if im on a day hike while camping I can bring all of my wants in my shorts thats phone, keys, wallet, pocket knife, flashlight, snacks, cards, camera, book. Its so hard to get rid of that utility, when I go to work my nice pants feel uncomfortable if i have more than my keys and my phone.

I'm old and like cargo shorts. Of course I don't care what anyone thinks of my appearance.

That's why everyone should have an ad block extension on their browser

Nah, the places I visit deserve their pennies from ads. And I've learned to kind of like that targeted advertising. Cargo shorts in my mind...cargo shorts in my ads! Better than random irrelevant junk in the ads.

Two pair. From Target.

They (and the two pairs of longer-panted versions, from Costco) are my "dad's weekend pants," which means I can carry everybody's everythings and still have a space for my phone, even if I'm wearing a pocketless shirt.

The only thing missing from this picture is a pair of white New Balance sneakers.

Oh, wait, I have a pair of those, too. And bucket hats.

Triple Threat!

I have noticed an increase in the opposite of cargo shorts. You know the skin tight spandex ones usually worn by women and bicyclists. There are no pockets. Nothing gets transported in them. I call them embargo shorts.

Your poll failed to ask if the cargo shorts were solid color, plaid or camo.

I have 5 pair, 3 are camo, one is tan, another is khaki

I use my cargo pockets like my wife uses her purse.
I'm always holding stuff for the kids or a 6pk of water bottles

I have 6 pairs:
4 various shades of khaki
1 black (fading to grey)
1 navy blue (fading to bluish grey?)

I wear those or jean shorts whenever possible because nobody likes pants. I find the extra pockets on the cargo shorts to be incredibly helpful for carrying my wallet, keys, and cell phone.

I'm also a little curious how many of the poll respondants are women. Although it does exist, I wouldn't imagine cargo shorts to be a popular women's garment.

My problem with shorts today is that the style has them basically going down to the knee. When I was a kid, shorts were shorts! Now, when I look for a pair, they're a niche product of 'running' shorts. The last pair I picked up were like this:

I blame underwear. When I was a kid, it was all briefs, today all boxers. Short short + boxers = high risk. (But boxers are way more comfortable and better looking so I'm staying with them.)

I own 2 pairs of cargo shorts. I haven't worn them in a long time, because I just realized I still had them. They still fit, though, and I have no qualms against wearing them, I just prefer jean shorts.

I also own one pair of cargo pants, and I wear them about once or twice a week.

Looks up cargo shorts...

Ah.

We just call them shorts here (seriously - there's a choice between them and what are called footy shorts, which offer slightly less coverage than undies).

And all of mine are those they them things. I wear them the majority of the time. In fact about the only time I don't is for work (I am required to wear some uncomfortable and frankly ridiculous trousers, but hey, that's the corporate tribal mentality for you) and a few weeks in winter when it is (mostly) too cold for shorts.

I wear cargo shorts because the other styles are usually too short or too slim.

Are cargo shorts not in?

I have numerous pairs. Numerous.

It's all I wear in the summer.

Along with my flip-flops.

If somebody told you that cargo shorts and flip flops were not "in," would you change your style?

I didn't think so.
