I know that eating human flesh has very big health risks. There's a disease called Kuru that you can contract from eating abnormal prions.

But does that hold true if you're consuming your own flesh? I mean either you're not infected with abnormal prions and it'd be safe to eat your own flesh, or you are, and hey, you're already infected, so you're not risking catching it anyway.

Yeah, I think it's pretty safe. Anything that is already in your body is probably going to be harmless in your gut. Enjoy dinner, and remember: Don't overeat!

You should be fine as long as you wash it down with a nice Chianti.

That's the great thing - overeat all you like, no net weight gain!

No, you're not. Whew!

Edit: Great. Now that I've responded to this thread I keep getting cannibalism and cannibalism-related ads in my browser.

Most problems can be solved with either a stiff drink, a bowel movement, or a bullet.

I believe as long as you've cooked yourself thoroughly you should be at low risk to eat yourself.

Meaning we should all eat our own thumbs... and make sure they are well-done?
I've never cooked my own thumb.
Is there a proper garnish for human digits?

For finger food, you just dig in and scrape the bottom of the barrel.

This a dangerous assumption! We (humans) have a very diverse natural flora, both on our surface and in our GI system (in fact, there are probably more bacterial cells than human cells (by quantity; definitely not by mass as bacteria are much, much smaller) in a typical person – although far from the 10:1 ratio that is sometimes “common knowledge”). While it may be normal to have various bacteria on our skin or in our intestines, these same bacteria can be harmful if ingested.

As a food safety professional, I strongly recommend ensuring that you are well cooked before consuming yourself. For whole-muscle cuts, an internal temperature of 63°C (145°F) is recommended; for ground meat, 74°C (165°F). Always use a food thermometer – a digital instant-read thermometer is recommended! Also, don’t forget to promptly refrigerate leftovers to prevent spoilage.

There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go no one may follow, that path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow.

To seek the sacred river Alph, to walk the caves of ice, to break my fast on honey dew and drink the milk of paradise... I had heard the whispered tales of immortality, the deepest mystery, from an ancient book I took a clue.

I've studied cannibalism in history and there seems to be a more direct correlation between consumption and disease when one eats the organs (brains, kidneys, liver, etc.) of the same species.

Studies of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy have lead many scientist to suspect that the entry point of the disease was from feed made from the processed organs of the same species, including cow brains, that led to the formation of this disease.
