I have the original Age of Empires board game (though I never got the builder's expansion).

Other than this game appears to be designed for users in a much better way, are there major differences between these two versions?

A fairly thorough comparison was done by Age of Empires III fans, of which Empires: AoD is a "deluxified" version/variation of. The deluxe version includes cleaned-up rules, new board, double-sided board with world variant on back (if you have the requisite, optional components for), heavier/thicker components, metal coins, new/updated national advantages (optional), new insert, great big beautiful box and a few other things detailed on this thread here in the Age of Empires III forums:

Differences in the new version (Capital Buildings, Discovery Tiles & Cards)

Also, instead of a separate expansion, the Builder expansion from AoEIII is more-or-less incorporated into the game now (it can be removed if desired). I personally would rather leave it in, it's a good fit.

I've never had the pleasure to play the original AoE III but despite a few flaws (a few component errors, which the team was quite up front about) I am a fan of Empires: Age of Discovery. Great game!

Hope that helps!
