found these on Prime and watched a few. Good writing for a cartoon, though the animation is not as good.

Anyone remember these.

I watched this back in the 70s when they first came out and have seen them occasionally since. Some of the episodes are quite good.

I keep hoping they're going to include M'Ress and Arex in the new Trek.

I only found out this was a thing about 12 years ago. I particularly enjoyed More Tribbles, More Troubles.

I think they are currently on Netflix (or at least they were pretty recently; I should check).

They are pretty cheesy, but I remember watching them a bunch on Nickelodeon as a kid.

This is why the Kzin are in Star Fleet Battles.

At least one of the scenarios in Star Trek: Attack Wing is also taken from TAS.

Actually ... I'm currently out of work for an extended time with a severe knee injury ... but I've been trying to use the time (amongst other, more productive things) to go back and watch all the Star Trek. I'm currently on season 2 of TNG but before that watched TAS. Stories were often better than I remembered! And I did see that several were based on treatments for episodes that would have occurred if there was a fourth season.

I actually think it would be cool to bring back the animated series ...

There was a proposal about ten years ago for a new animated show (my avatar is from that proposal).

Wow, a lot of the first two seasons were cringe-worthy.

Absolutely! Although so is much of TOS. In fact, I totally gave up on TNG midway through the first season figuring it would never last (I'm pretty sure it was after the one where Wesley got sentenced to death for not keeping off the grass). It's only when my friends were gushing about it between halves of "Best of Both Worlds" that I gave it another chance.

Many of the shows had some low points.

Lately I am watching Enterprise (season 4)
Good stuff in that season. That redux of Mirror Mirror is quite good.

A reboot of the animated series could be a hit. The writing has to quality though. I think that is why Star Trek (TAS) is good. Better animation would only improve that.

So they were on a 5 year mission...right?

It has been 40+ years!

Are they going to go home?
Have they thought about going home?
Are they going to retire? Geez, don't they think the younger generation wants a shot at employment?

Wait,... wait. If it is anything like Earth now, the Federation and those people are better off by continuing to work.

My apologizes.

Filmation had a very tight deadline for getting the series out once they were selected for producing the animated series. As bad as folks may think Filmation's animation was, I think Hanna-Barbera's was worse during the same period. I consider the 70's as the nadir of American cel animation.

Anyway, there were some fine episodes that were packed into 21 minutes. Featuring the voice talent from the original series, only Walter Koenig's is conspicuously missing.

"Yesteryear" is often listed as the best of the animated episodes.
"Mudd's Passion" is perhaps the funniest.
"The Majicks of Megas-Tu" feels a lot (perhaps the most) like an episode from the original series.
"The Survivor" is a very melancholy episode.
"The Jihad" is, weirdly, Lord of the Rings in 20 minutes.
"The Time Trap" is one of my favorites for the all various ships they created for it.
"Albatross" is also an effective episode that has a TOS vibe.

Almost every episode has something in it that to recommend.

If you're a Trek fan, especially of the Original Series, it's definitely worth giving the Animated Series a spin!

Post-beard stuff is OK.

Indeed, 'Post-beard' has now become the antithesis of 'Jumping the shark'.

I'm just now 'discovering' The Next Generation at 34. I remember it being repeated all the time on TV when I was younger, but recently two people older than myself have highly recommended it so I'm working my way through it. I say working, I'm actually thoroughly enjoying it. I'm only half way through the first season but honestly it's a lot better than I thought, and if this and the second are considered the worst then I've got a lot to look forward to.

You can thank JJ Abrams for this, his films made me more interested in the show than I'd ever been before.

I did watch one half of an episode from TOS but I'd been told (and have since read) that TNG is the best place to start for any new fan. I agree, it has aged well and being all in HD on Netflix and with updated effects it really doesn't feel anywhere near as old as it is. I also think I simply prefer Picard over Kirk.

Slowly becoming a Trekky, and loving it.

Engage!
