I picked this up at DTC and have heard the Rule Book is pretty poorly written, I've tried watching a video or two but they really havent helped me understand "HOW to play the game"

any suggested player aids/videos? to help me learn how to play?

The rulebook is not *that* bad. I certainly learned the game from it. You say you've heard it's poorly written, but did you read it (and then the FAQ)?

I found the FAQ easier to digest after a couple of plays to get the basics down and identify some of the edge cases so the FAQ would make more sense.

If you can't attempt a playthrough first, I'd try looking through the archive for your specific questions, or just ask some of them, people will be happy to answer.

Search YouTube for the dragon table channel. You will find a decent instructional video for this game.

Here are the links:

There are several others you can find in the instructional video section of the game's BGG web page.

I can echo all of the above. Ricky Royal is my absolute go-to for how-to-play videos. Plus there is something relaxing about the tone of his voice. The searchable FAQ is vital for quick look ups of edge case rulings and the Castaways guide is another wonderful tool to help learn the game. The game itself is surprisingly intuitive once you've played a couple of rounds. My 10 year-old daughter totally grasps the whole game and we love playing it together.

You read the 57 page FAQ and then thought the rulebook wasn't clear?

Welcome to the club!

There is a new English language rulebook coming out soon. Hopefully there will be a pdf that may help.

I managed to play and enjoy the game from the rulebook alone - but there were loads of situations that left me wondering:
What does that mean?
What do I do here?
When does that happen?
Can I do this now?
Did I do that right?
Have I won yet?

No, I thought the rulebook was fairly clear to begin with, and then the FAQ showed me some of the subtleties I hadn't run into in the course of the first few plays that helped me deepen my understanding.

I didn't read the FAQ until after playing several times (actually it didn't exist initially).

I work in software, and I support people using my (very complex software). I'm quite familiar with the problem of people being totally confused by something that's very clear to me. The problem is that "I don't get it" doesn't provide any real path to help. Ask a specific question and there's a specific answer, but when you just don't get it, the common wavelength just isn't there to help.
