They fit really tight and I imagine them tearing after several uses.

I take the leader's base off and slip the ring onto the base and then re-seat the Leader into the base. Hope this helps.

Very, Very carefully!

Just kidding, kind of, be careful. I didn't have so much a problem with the rings as with actually putting the characters on their stands, tight fit pushed up some of the paper on the characters. Then I figured out to start angling them in as opposed to pushing them straight down onto the stand.

Hopefully they just break in after a few uses and not wind up tearing.

This is the way I found to do it. The bottoms of the base are larger than the top.

I can only suggest you take a look at this solution, which works GREAT and is very easy to implement.
It only requires you still have the center bits, and you have/aquire some small magnets.

This is what we got and we no longer tear up the cardboard for the leaders everytime we remove them from the bases. Terrible design by FFG, great design and profit for the guy making these.
