In at least one, and maybe more of the arena scenarios the bosses can not be engaged in any way. (That is they can't move, be destroyed, or have anything move into their hex).
So I am wondering why they need to be there?
I guess I am missing something in the arena rules?
Any clarification most welcome.

Most likely so their passive abilities affect the players--less dice for players, raider movement, etc.

I got the game for the co-op aspect of it. haven't even looked at the PvP modes.

I would agree with Tony though that it is most likely for the abilities that they have.

Only in the "Arena: Interstellar Conflict" scenario it is clearly stated that you can not engage or kill bosses. In this scenario we want the Bosses' effects to be present and modify the arena battle ground accordingly.
