Why is it necessary for anyone to close their eyes during the initial setup?

The way I understood it, all of the decks are shuffled around and nobody knows what color they, or anybody else is getting when they choose at the beginning. So, why is there a portion where everybody is supposed to close their eyes except for the lead assassin? And then everybody else chooses while the lead assassin closes their eyes.

Am I missing something? Is the L.A. supposed to get more/less/different information from everybody else? Or is this just supposed to keep someone from keeping track of the decks when they are shuffled around? It seems like this is an entirely unnecessary step.

This rule is to keep someone from keeping track of the decks as they are being shuffled around.

The rule book does not accurately describe what is happening here. The Lead Assassin should not have more or less knowledge than any other player.

During Set-Up players know where each deck is. Assume that each player has a great memory. All players but the Lead Assassin close their eyes and the Lead Assassin moves the decks around.
At this point the Lead Assassin knows where each deck is. Now the Lead Assissin closes their eyes and the group moves the decks around again, now the Lead Assassin does not know where each deck is.

To speed up the game each player selects one deck for themselves and places any unused decks on the dummy player space and the last deck is placed in front of the Lead Assassin.

No one knows where any of the decks are and now it's time to play!
