For anyone not following the speculation thread:

On BGG's Livestream of Gencon, Jay Tummelson briefly discussed a game called "New Frontiers", which he described as something like Race for the Galaxy: the board game. He said it would be coming out next year. Perhaps this is one of the "in the pipeline" RftG games?

It's the first time I've heard of it.

This was confirmed:

Yup; it's the last of the four "original" pipeline games.

Estimated release sometime in 2017.

There isn't much info yet. The following is about New Frontiers:

However, having a week to consider, I am looking forward to #2 more. It has more going on and an interesting mix of mechanics. He didn't say anything about when it was coming out however. They are still working on the size and layout of the player boards.

And Tom hinted that it's not a 4X game here.

I doubt it! I don't think that's the kind of thing Tom does.

But that's exactly the type of thing Rio Grande does with Tom L's games. See San Juan, which predates RTFG, but was based on the original design of RTFG's prototype.

San Juan was an Alea design, not RGG, which RGG then imported.

This is incorrect. I worked on a Puerto Rico card game, some of whose ideas were used for San Juan and some of whose ideas became RFTG.

I do like how complex a family tree of Race & related games would be. I remember this post with an incomplete family tree. Add Roll, The City, Jump Drive, New Frontiers... Actually there are probably plenty of other games that could be added too.

Yes, see this thread. There are now two more products which have been "green-lit".

I wonder if they ever considered naming it "Puerto Rico - The Card Game - The Board Game".

New Frontiers has elements from a few games, including Roll for the Galaxy. I would not characterize it as a re-theme of any game. That's selling it short.
