Hi. I am relatively familiar with the pirates game. I recently stumbled upon a place that sold 6 collectible tins for $32, including shipping. thats a total of 48 ships. is that too much for someone that is just starting out, or is it a bit much for a newcomer. It seemed like such a good deal, but that is quite a large number of ships for someone just starting out. Yay or Nay?

I thought I would like it, but cost versus fun didn't pan out. bestpart was putting them together. gameplay was boring compared to other battle games. check the comments section on the game's page. check the lower end ratings to see why it wasn't liked by some and see if that concerns you as well before putting that much into a game. also remember there are 6 expansions to it, so it might be one of those "I need some of every expansion" games so costs might go up. putting them together is still fun, though. Oltremare has 5 similar`ships to make`in it, and that was all I need now for my little ships collection. One thing is, is that you can make your own game out of the bits or tweak it some to your liking.

I plan on making my own rules, specificly moving and attacking in the same turn.
Another thing, are the newer factions (corsairs, rebellion, merc, etc.)
one shot deals for their particular expansion, or do they plan on making these groups updated in newer releases. any comments on this would be helpful, as the tins contain only PotR and PotSM.

also...for the firepot specialist, it says replace a mast...blah blah blah. does it come with the fire masts, and if so, how many?

Not that this is a fair comparison, but I do believe that this game shares its mechanics with the old Games Workshop naval game. That game had (has?) a very loyal following, but was probably 6 times the financial commitment.

The "Pirates" series is just "OK." My buddies played 5 or 6 games and enjoyed it over 2 or 3 sessions, but we haven't returned to it in over 6 months. The money will eat you up eventually, as with all collectibles. Spending $32.00 to try it out doesn't sound like a bad deal at all - I wish I'd only spent $32.00 on it.

It is a great deal! Like any collectible game, having more ahips gives you more of a variety to build your fleet with.

I would not change the rules that drastically. It would make some ships and crew/personalities useless. For example allowing a move and shoot as one action would make a captain useless. Also, there are ships and personalities that allow an extra action. It would give a HUGE advantage to certain players (having a ship or personality that allows for extra action is abused enough as is). So, play with the rules first and then decide. When my group started, we used a rule that allowed the assignment of generic crew to any ship regardless of nationality (for example, a generic Spanish explorer could used on a pirate ship).

The firepot specialist comes with 2 fire tokens to replace a mast with.

The default scenerio is good for getting acquinted with the rules but you'll soon want a different scenerio. You can find more scenerios in magazines such as Scrye and on the website.

My group and I are still enjoying the game. There have been different terrains released with each expansion which has kept the game fresh and interesting (IMO icebergs are the best followed by the mysterious islands).

Next week is the 100 point fleet battle scenerio. Can't wait to make the sea into a shipyard grave!
